Lord, if you [G] should be [D] [G] looking down on me
I was [C] born again October the 18th, 1970, [N] in a little church here in Nashville, Tennessee.
And I had gone down the wrong road so, so many times, so much of my life.
I went through a bad marriage.
I have three beautiful children from that marriage.
And my life was just on a road to destruction with drugs and alcohol and all the things that go along with a wrong kind of life.
And there was a young woman that actually was the pastor's wife that worked in my brother Johnny Cash's office.
Her name was Dottie, and she began to witness to me.
And she always had that Bible laying on her desk.
And the Bible convicted me just sitting there because I knew the Bible was the word of God.
I knew it was very powerful, and I knew it was all that we all needed.
I just didn't have Jesus in my heart at the time.
So my brother Johnny rented a six-seater airplane to fly down from Nashville to South Arkansas and back in one day to a Cash family reunion.
On the way back, we ran into a hailstorm, and we almost didn't make it.
The storm was terrible.
And during the midst of that hailstorm, I cried out to the Lord.
I said, if you'll save my life today, I'll give you the rest of the days of my life.
And of course, the plane landed.
The next day was Sunday.
I walked in this church that was so full of the Spirit of the Lord.
And the preacher was preaching on Samson in the book of Judges and hands full of honey and the strength that Samson had through the power of the Lord.
As a matter of fact, I just read that story again today.
And I knew that I was really lost, and I wanted so much to know Christ.
And the preacher began preaching, and he gave the invitation.
And I came down to the altar not really knowing whether the Lord would receive me or not.
And he did receive me, of course.
He did forgive me of all my sins.
The pastor opened up the Word of God, and he went to Romans 3.23,
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
And Romans 6.23, But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
And I knew that I had come short of the glory of God.
And in 1 John 1.9,. it says, If you will confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive you and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. That was what I needed to hear, that verse. So I received Christ that day. My life had been full of fear and all kinds of things that were not of God. And when I gave my heart to the Lord that Sunday morning, October 18, 1970, the pastor's wife came over, and she opened up the Word of God. She realized the fear I had had before I knew Jesus. And she opened it up to Isaiah 41, verse 10, that says, Fear thou not, for I am with thee. Be not dismayed, for I am thy God. I will help you, and I will strengthen you, and I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. I said, Is that for me? And she said, Oh, yes, that's for you. And every day since then, that verse has been part of my day, that I don't have to be afraid. I don't have to be fearful about life or about anything else. I know Jesus is in my heart, and I know that Word [Am] of God [G] is in my heart. I know that Jesus is in my heart.
