_ _ She left a letter on the table
_ [D] Said she'd be home by 5
_ The smell of old [Am] coffee
_ Lingers on my mind
[A] Well, this is album number 16,
what to do differently than the 15 predecessors.
I _ really wanted to make this album original.
It's been a while since I basically was involved
in the writing of an entire album.
[G] _ _ [D] _ _ _ Cry like a [A] sky bird _ _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ [D] _ _ Never give up, you're [E] my lover
_ _ I went to Nashville and I didn't write a country record,
I wrote a blues record. _
_ _ [A] And it's coming out great.
The first day was _ tough, [D] we did a lot of takes,
I'm pretty tired today.
But _ some records fight you and some [Am] records come one take.
This [Ab] one may fight us a little [A] bit,
but I think it's _ _ yielded some really [E] great results. _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ Oh, [Am] it's tracking.
Oh, it's tracking.
The _ heat and frost
_ _ [Eb] _ _ _ _ Cry like a [E] sky bird
_ Never give up, you're [A] my lover _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ [D] _ _ _ _
Cry like a [A] sky bird
We always enjoy [D] the studio at the Palms
and Pat and Zoe and Mark and Brent
and [Am] the whole crew over there.
And it's a very creative place for us
because there [Db] really isn't any distractions, we're not at home.
_ All you have to do is just go from your hotel room
to the studio and then back to your hotel room.
_ _ So it's a very focused session.
[E] _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Oh, _ _ gravity
_ _ Weighing on my soul
_ _ _ Keeps bringing you round back to me
_ Like dirt to a stone _ _ _ _
Oh, _ gravity _ _
Don't you ever go to sleep _ _
Might wake up in the morning
_ And she'll be gone from your room
_ _ [G] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ So [G] we finished all the tracking in [E] Las Vegas,
which means we got all the drums down, the bass down, the keyboards,
and the guitars, _ and most of the raw vocals.
_ Because we have to work pretty quickly,
I make a point of capturing a few performances of each.
[F] And then I've been getting back here and just going through the performances,
seeing which ones I [Em] like the best and preparing it to mix.
I'm trying to get to this goodbye _ _
I'd [E] rather start again on this dirt floor
_ [Em] _ I'm going back to the man I was before
_ _ It's [E] a bitter _ pill to swallow
_ [Em] We listen to the demo that Joe makes of the song,
so we all have an idea.
And then [N] the coming together when we all sit down to play,
we [C] all kind of feel each other out _ [E] musically
to see how everyone approaches it,
and it really is a group _ [Em] conversation.
_ [Am] _ _ Everybody goes their way
Won't you not
_ _ [F] _ _ Everybody starts to [C] hold on to
What [F] they've got
[C] _ _ _ Start to settle _ in
With that long haul
Each [E] person has creative ideas of their own,
and we have to make sure it fits what Kevin and Joe's,
their dream [F] is supposed to be,
what [C] they're thinking in their heads.
So [G] we're maneuvering lots of waters,
[Am] we're swimming around trying to figure out [F] parts,
so each one of us has [C] different ideas of which way we want to [G] go,
but the director, [Am] Kevin, has to [F] direct the traffic.
So [C] someone goes, okay, [G] try it in this direction,
you just go in [Am] that direction,
then [C] once you've found it, then you can embellish it, [E] personalize it,
so that you're expressing [Gb] yourself within that [Am] idea.
Also _ [C] _ _
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ [Am] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Dm] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Am] we need additional instruments.
Lenny Castro came in today and [E] played some percussion.
Lee Thornburgh's coming in tomorrow to do some horns on 4 or 5 songs.
Doug Henthorne's coming in on Sunday morning to do some background vocals.
So we'll all do that in this room here,
and then I'll start mixing next week,
and [D] we should have the record finished in about 2 weeks' time. _
[E] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[A] _ You know, this record is a little different, I think, [D] for Joe,
_ and I don't know if I can explain it to you why,
but it just feels like, _ _
[F] _ well, aside from the fact [E] that he wrote everything, _
[A] _ it just feels like there's a little [G] more jamming,
_ there's a little different kind of [D] writing on it.
It's [E] just different, it doesn't feel like one of the records [F] that we've done before,
which [Am] is good, because he's growing,
and every year he's getting more successful,
and he's a fantastic guitarist and singer,
and [G] a great guy to [Am] be around.
I mean, all of them, Kevin, of course, and all the guys in the band,
[A] I couldn't be happier to be here. _ _ _
[Am] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
