Joel Hoekstra - diminished 7th tapping excercise chords
Start Jamming...
Hey, everybody.
This is Joel Hoekstra from Night Ranger Rock of Ages
and Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Today's lick of the day is diminished seventh,
tapping mayhem.
[Fm]
[D] [G]
[F] All right, so basically, a diminished seventh arpeggio
is just a series of minor thirds, which is every three
frets on the guitar.
So [Bm] what we're dealing with [Eb] is trying
to outline that with tapping, OK?
So the best way to start is just [F] by starting the first fret
on the low E, [Ab] fourth.
OK, just first finger and pinky.
[Ab] Now the right hand.
Again, when you get into something like this,
you're going to need to get your right hand a little more
over your guitar than [F] normal.
You can't come from the side with this, OK?
So [Ab] I'm going to set down the index finger on [B] the seventh
fret, [D] and the third finger on the tenth fret.
There's your basic four-note pattern now, OK?
I just want to get you used to playing those four notes
before we get into the actual tapping pattern, OK?
So you might even just try working up [F] and down [Ab] that.
[Bm] [Ab]
[F] One note about tapping.
Anytime you tap, make sure that when
you pull off of a note, say I fret [B] this [D] note and then
this note, when I'm coming [B] back to here, you need to pull up.
[Bm] If you push down, you hear there's no, there's nothing there.
So [B] you need to come across the string, [F] up, OK?
So there are your four notes.
And I thought, well, let me come up
with a little more of an interesting pattern with it.
So I'm starting with the right hand.
[B] I'm going to go [D] 7, 10.
We're going to pull that off [Ab] to 4 on the left hand.
[B] Fret 7 with the index finger of the [F] right, off the [Ab] 1, and then [Bm] 4.
So slowly, that pattern goes like this.
[F] [Ab] You should spend a long time right there
before you even bother with the rest,
because everything else [Gb] is the exact same pattern.
All you're going to do is jump up a fret or two.
So once I got that up to speed, now we just
go to the next [Fm] string [Gb] [D]
and [Ab] the next string.
And each time, we're going up a fret, the only exception
being when you get to the B string,
you're going to jump two [Eb] fret.
That's just the way the guitar is tuned.
[Ab] [B]
And when we end there, I'm doing [E]
the 17th fret
with my third finger, just giving it a [Gb] little slide up
for effect, just for fun.
So again, that lick, slowly, [Fm] [B] [D] [Bm]
[Gb] and quickly.
