Hey everybody, this is Joel Hoechster from Night Ranger Rock of Ages and Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Today's lick of the day is the legato kitchen sink, because it has a little bit of everything. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ _ _ [F] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ [Fm] _ [E] _ _ Okay, so basically what we have here is a lick just outlining chords, and I started off with an A chord, okay?
So we're just gonna get started by picking the fifth fret [Am] on the high E.
That's an A, okay?
And now instead of coming down an A chord
_ [A] like this, I kind of thought, wouldn't it be more interesting to break it down
so those three notes are all on the G together.
So we're gonna pick the ninth fret, [D] pull off to the [C#] seventh, and then the sixth.
[G] Remember when you do pull-offs not to push up with your left hand, you're gonna pull down.
If I push [C#] up, you can hear that there's no volume coming off of that.
It's not even.
[D] So you can see when I pull [C#] down, I'm getting those [A] nice strong pull-offs, okay?
So, so far we have_
[D] _ [C#] We're just gonna climb right [E] back up by hammering on seven and nine, okay?
So basically, if you want to start with this lick, you can start right there.
Just [A] work on_ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Cool sounding lick in its own right.
So the only thing we're gonna change [C#m] is every other time,
[F#] we're gonna bar and [A] get the ninth fret there. _ _
So we have_ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ You can hear me use a little bit of palm muting there to get that [G] percussive sound.
Anyway, that's just become a lick of mine to outline major chords over the years. _ _ _ _
So there's going down to G.
I mean, this is just [A] A, _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [C] okay?
Then we're just moving it down to [G] G, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ okay?
Now just for kicks on [F] F because it would be really what's in key in the mode,
_ this [C] pattern is going to change here.
We're not going [G] to go there.
We're [B] gonna _ [F] keep it in key, make it more of a Lydian thing,
more like F Lydian for those theory dorks out there [B] like myself.
[Em] _ And we're gonna [A] go_
_ _ Okay, so we've got_ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Okay, and _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ on [E] F.
Now I decided to end the exercise with just something out of an E dominant Phrygian scale.
We're going fourth fret on the high E _ [Fm]
and hammering on five,
back down to four, [E] and then one.
Remember where your pull-offs [Fm] pull [A] down real strong.
You can hear how nice and loud those ring out.
[Fm] _ _ _ And we're gonna go to the fifth on the B. _
_ _ So again, you can start with just that.
_ Once that's comfortable, _ _
_ _ now we're [G] just gonna apply that to the next string of the scale _ and the [A] next string [Fm] again. _
[E] _ So we have_
_ [A] _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ _ _ [F] _ [E] _ _
So we end up with [A] this. _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ [A] _ Okay, just a quick note.
You can get this lick done with your right hand with just the pick,
but I'm a little bit of a lazy guy.
So when it comes to the high E, what I'm doing is using the middle finger from my right hand.
So a little bit of a hybrid picking.
And again, don't feel obligated to do so,
but you can see when I'm playing A, _ _ _ _ _ _
_ that every time I'm playing the high E,
that accent is coming out with the middle finger of my right hand. _ _ _ _
[G] And then it follows suit.
_ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ Okay, and then on the run down, we're going pick,
_ [E] and [D] then here _ [E] on those last four notes of each pattern,
_ I'm going middle, _ pull-off, [Fm] pick, middle. _
_ [A] _ _ [Fm] _ _ [E] So that run looks like this with my right hand.
_ _ [A] _ _ _
[Am] _ _ [Fm] _ _ [E] _ _ Again, most
