[Em] and [E] I stalk him and wait to hear these songs because I just love the sentiment and I just think he's a genius
and how he writes songs and crafts them and he's such a guy.
[F#m] Well, [F]
[A#m] [D#] I do okay but I'm mostly [Am] the looks of this group [A#] as y'all [E] can tell.
Y'all snubbed that now.
[F] That ain't funny anymore [E] y'all.
I might mess [A] this song up.
I haven't done [A#] it in a while.
We're cutting a [F#] brand new album.
These are our friends and we're [E] in our living room so just keep it like that.
Just make it like it's back.
When I [B]
first [A] bought the old [E] farmhouse I started researching the history of the farm and Calvin and Sarah Hardison
and so I joined the historic society in Murray County where we live [F#] and [A] when I was going to some of those meetings
and looking around [E] I got to read some letters from a Civil War soldier named J [D].W. Robinson who [Em] was writing home to [E] his wife.
Her name was Josephine which is what I call my wife and he was missing her and the baby and it was December of 1861
and I read those ten letters, about ten of them, and [Bm] I never read [E] any other ones.
I don't know what happened in the story.
I only know those ten letters and I [F#] loved how he wrote because it was [Fm] so beautiful and [E] poetic.
[F] The grammar was terrible, the spelling was terrible, but it [E] was unbelievably beautiful.
So I took those letters and almost everything straight out of it and I wrote this song and this is one of the songs we're going to record on our next record.
I'm writing this letter my darling from high on a hill
We've been marching ten days and we're just outside [B] Hopkinsville
[E] It's been snowing all night and we ain't got no [A] more kerosene
It's [E]
colder than [B] hell, hope you're doing [E] well Josephine
There's a fever in camp and our boys are too sick to fight
We've done a lot so count it, weaver won't make it through [B] the night
[E] I overheard the captain say some words he's never [A] said
[E] I'm losing some weight but I'm [B] still standing up straight [E]
Josephine
Jay [A] and my children are missing and wish I could kiss them once more
[E] They've grown a foot since they waved me goodbye [B] at the [E] door
[A] Tell mama and daddy I'm alright and just one more drink
I
[E] love you, I love [B] you, I love you [E] Josephine
There's three thousand inches camped in the river below
Six hundred of us, at least there was two nights [B] ago
[E] Will Erwin desert and they come you down [A] by the stream
[E] God I'm so scared, [B] keep me in your prayers [E] Josephine
Will the orders come down, we attack tonight at nightfall
We can stop them right here, we can win this war once [B] and for all
You [E] know I killed a union boy last week, bet he [A] wasn't fourteen
He [E] looked just like my son, [B] forgive me for what I've [E] done Josephine
Jay [A] and my children are missing and wish I could kiss them once more
[E] They've grown a foot since they waved me goodbye at the door
[A] Tell mama and daddy I'm alright and just one more thing
I [E] love you, I love you, I [B] love you [E]
Josephine
Lastly my darling in case I should be killed
Don't leave me too long and promise me [B] that you will
[E] Marry another and don't let him treat [A] our babies mean
[E] And he's holding you, [B] won't you think of me [E] too Josephine
Jay [A] and my babies are missing and wish I could kiss them once more
[E] They've grown a foot since they waved me goodbye at the door
[A] Tell mama and daddy I'm alright and just one more thing
I [E] love you, I love you, I love you Josephine
