Yeah, the trumpet is an instrument that I started playing later.
I started playing the
trumpet, a lot of people think [N] I started with it, you know.
But I started when I was 17,
dabbling with it, because when I played with Miles, I was with Miles Davis at that time,
I heard him play it every night.
I mean, and watched it and heard that sound, and I was
watching his fingers and I could remember, okay, when he plays this one, that's an E.
So I was remembering that.
So when I got off the road, I went and got a trumpet.
And I
said, I'm going to learn how to play it, just have fun with it, you know.
I didn't think
I was going to, you know.
So I started, and I had a pretty good sound, and it was kind
of easy.
So I started, you know, I wanted to play just like Miles, you know.
So about,
I was playing for about a year, and I hadn't said anything to Miles.
And I went to go see
him in L.A. in Redondo Beach, at a place called The Strand.
And I went there, and we were
hanging out, talking and stuff.
And I said, Miles, I've been playing the trumpet.
Oh,
yeah.
I said, yeah.
He said, so he handed me his trumpet.
Play.
And I'm like, oh my
God.
So he handed it to me, and then he turned around and he went and walked away to go sit
down.
And I played one of his lines perfectly.
I mean I was like, man, this came off so good.
I didn't make one mistake.
I played it.
And he turned around and said, what?
He said,
you sound just like me.
And he said, play that again.
And I played it again.
And he
said, that was good, you played it better the first time.
So after that, he really got
a kick out of me playing the trumpet, and sounding like him.
So I kept playing it and
stuff.
And every time I'd see him, he'd want me to play for him.
And I was getting better
and better because I was practicing.
So I had all these lines of his down, and he'd
make me play over the phone and all these different things.
So one of the times I went
to see him again, and he had me play for him, when we got done, he took the mouthpiece off
his trumpet and gave it to me.
And then it turned into, and then every time I'd see him,
he'd give me another one.
Like I have two of them from him.
So that's why I started
playing the trumpet.
And then I didn't play as much for a long time.
And I think people
kind of forgot that I even played, because it was starting to get known, he plays trumpet
too.
But this last year something got me really interested in it again.
I just wanted
to play more.
I started playing a little bit and then I had a hernia, right, an umbilical
hernia so you can't really, so I had that fixed.
The doctor said, oh you can do whatever.
So I started getting serious with the trumpet again.
And so this last year I've been really
going at it.
And now people, I didn't know you played trumpet, you know.
But I'm better
now I think than I've ever been.
And it's really fun.
Yeah and I like to sing too.
The
first thing I ever did really was sing, you know, when I was a kid.
I liked to sing Fats
Down at Blueberry Hill.
That was my big.
Then it was Elvis.
I was an Elvis impersonator,
you know.
I was very conflicted.
I wanted to play like Jimmy Smith and then I'd want
a white suit on and sing like Elvis.
What are you going to do?
But I love singing.
I
love Frank Sinatra.
I love Ray Charles.
So I kind of, I could scream like, you know,
sing some blues or I could croon if I like to.
And I enjoy doing that.
