Start Jamming...
So coming up on today, John Farnham talks about singing with Coldplay to launch his big comeback.
It's Farnsey's one and only interview while he's on tour.
That's right, the one and only.
We'll bring it to you at 7.40.
That was a really great thing and to get a phone call from those guys, I mean, I did remark to Chris that, you know, [Eb] I'm not nervous.
Here I am working with the biggest band [Bb] in the world.
He said, oh no, you don't have to worry about [Eb] that, mate.
We're only the second [F] biggest band in the world.
[Eb]
[Bb] [Eb]
[Bb] [B] Yeah, it started the ball rolling and it's Farnsey going to launch a big tour.
We hope so, don't we?
What [A] [D]
[A] [Bm]
about the voice?
Sydney's [A] iconic Luna Park [D]
celebrated its 75th [E] anniversary yesterday and as part of the celebrations, another Australian icon, [G] John Farnham, took to the stage under [A] the big top for a brilliant performance last [Bm] night.
I spoke to John about his new album, his current tour [A] and that incredible [B] voice.
[A] [D]
[Gb] He is quite simply [B] one of the best singers in the world and he's been doing it for a while now, [A] striking gold with his first [D] single back in [Bb] 67.
[Eb] [Gm]
[Bb] And rewriting history 20 years later when Whispering Jack became the biggest selling album in Australian music history.
[C] Number one for 26 weeks straight.
[F]
[Eb]
And [Gm] now after countless sellout shows, [Ab]
number one [F] CDs and a bit of a break, his first studio album in five years.
[Eb] Yes, indeed.
Jack [Gm] is back.
Musicians in your road crew and people who've [F] worked with you over the years say there's only one thing better than seeing John Farnham in concert and that's seeing John Farnham at [Gm] Soundcheck.
I soundcheck every night.
[D] It really does matter to me.
I mean, apart from the fact that, [A] you know, the crew, [D] the crew, the crew do all the hard work, you know that as well as I do.
I mean, they set it all up.
All I am is a chubby one out in the light, you know, getting all the applause.
I'd like to at least show them the courtesy [A] [D] of [G] [A]
[D] giving them a shot to make sure everything's OK.
So the soundcheck is a warm up for me, [G] but it's also a thing, a warm up for the crew as well.
You've played every [D] venue in Australia.
Pretty much.
Inside and out.
Somebody asked me what keeps me [G] going and every time [A] I work, I pretend it's the last time I'm ever [G] going to get to do it.
So that made, and I [Bm] put my heart in solid, gee, [G] I may never get to do this again.
I mean, all [Ab] that, all that thing about, you know, me [A] retiring.
I was [G] never going to retire.
It was just that I wasn't going to work the big [E] venues, the incense and all that sort of stuff again.
I [Gb] love working [Bm] rooms this size.
This is so fantastic.
[G] It's intimate.
I can eyeball everyone.
It's just [Fm] a great feeling.
[E] The new [Am] album is kind [G] of a collection [Fm] of [E] some familiar songs [Am] and a couple of [B] classics.
[F] Yeah, well, the [Em] Hit the Road [Am] Jack [Em] thing, that's [Am] my sense of humour.
When I did the Last Time tour, you know, I [Em] recorded The Last Time, This Could [A] Be the Last Time, which was [Em] a bit of fun.
It was my sense [F] of humour.
Unfortunately, nobody [E] got it.
[Am] That's, you know, me [Em] saying, if you hit the road, Jack, don't come [F] back no more.
But hang on, I [E] never knew how much I loved it.
[Am]
You've got [F] more fans than you know what to do with, but how important do you think the Coldplay gig was when someone's writing the history of John Farrell?
The reaction to [Eb] You're The Voice was terrific.
[Bb]
[Eb] He [Bb] remarked to Chris that, you know, I'm not nervous.
Here I am working with the biggest band in [Ab] the world.
He said, I know, you don't have to worry about that, mate.
We're only the second [Eb] biggest band in the world.
[Ab] Do you remember the time when you [Bb] became like a legend?
That's something I thought [D] about, Richard.
I truly do.
I mean, you know, those labels.
I mean, everyone's a diva.
[A] Everyone's [D] a legend.
You know, you'd [G] be in a business for five minutes, you're either a diva or a legend.
[A] That's fine.
I don't have a problem with that.
And I've just been [G] around for a long time.
Maybe a veteran [A] kind of would describe me [D] better.
[A] [G] [D]
[G]
[D] So you're doing this run of dates.
You've got the new album.
[G] Is this [A] going to herald like [D] a bigger tour?
[G] I don't know.
Wheatley's a bit excited [D] because [G] it's the [C] 25th anniversary [F] of Whispering [C] Jack.
[E]
So I reckon he'd have the diary out.
[G]
We'd all get our mullets out and the Ugg boots and the whole thing.
No, Richard, [C]
I haven't got [G] enough hair for a mullet anymore.
[C] I mean, I've got about $37 [F] worth of gel in this.
[C]
[F] [C] [Am]
[F] [G]
[C]
[N]
I tell you what, they did rock to it.
It was almost a religious experience for his fans watching him on stage last night.
John's new album, his first in five years, creatively titled Jack, is in stores next Friday.
And John playing shows around the country, including Royal Pines on the Gold Coast and Cooper's Brewery in [E] Adelaide.
He's kind of mixing it [Fm] up a bit.
All the [E] dates [Eb] are on our [N] website.
There you go.
John found them.
Cooper's Brewery in Adelaide.
That'll be a good gig.
They've got a big new amphitheatre there, apparently.
It sounds fantastic.
He's got to do a big tour.
I reckon in 25 years since Whispering Jack, you can bet your boots Wheatley will be booking venues right now.
Yeah, and you write about the voice.
I mean, the transition from, he'll hate us mentioning this, but Shady.
That was a [G] long time ago.
Shady, Shady.
This is [C] him.
Does this take you back, Dickie?
[G] Well before my time, I hastily point out.
Hastily point out.
What about the dancing here?
[C] We'll have a little bit of a jig [F] along here.
There we go.
Wanting to [C] big it up.
It's early in [A] his career.
Doesn't want to [D] promise too much.
Well, this is his first single.
[G] John's had several [Ab] careers, [Db] you know.
He had the King of Pop days back [Ab] then.
And he had that other huge hit, One is the Loneliest Number.
Yeah, we had a few of those.
And then of course the [Db] Whispering Jack stuff.
26 [Gb] weeks, you know, [N]
number one on the charts, Whispering Jack.
We've all got a copy of it.
Yeah, a couple of copies.
He got the double hit.
He got the vinyl and the CD.
Those were good days to be selling lots of records.
Nice days indeed.
Great interview, Dickie.
1.7 million copies of Whispering Jack sold in Australia.
Wow.
They're pretty numbers.
That's a lot of fishing.
