John Gorka live at tpt, February 14, 2014 chords
Start Jamming...
John Gorka is a folk musician who now calls Minnesota home.
The Red House Recording Artist is releasing a new album,
Bright Side of Down.
I love that title.
It's his first CD in four years.
Now Gorka says if you listen closely,
you hear the album's Midwest roots.
I don't know what that means, but we're going to ask him.
What does that mean?
And welcome.
Thank you.
I'm glad to be here.
I think there's a whole lot of winter in this record,
and it starts out in a blizzard in Iowa trying to get home
and ends with a song that's hoping for a spring
that seems way far off, kind of like where we are now.
That's really sweet.
You know, this is your fourth album.
How many years now?
This is my twelfth album.
Twelfth album in four years.
That's what it is.
Okay, so four years.
A lot of times people look at songwriters and go,
oh, they have to keep giving it out.
Is it that you had so much music you weren't really sure what to put on the CD?
Or it just took time?
I did a record with a couple of friends called Red Horse in between,
and that was an inspiring collaboration.
I think I was just trying to see what might come out of me.
And then I end up with more songs than I could put out on a record.
I kind of thought so.
Yeah, and I'm working on new things all the time.
But I like the way this one turned out.
I worked on it a little bit at a time over a period of about a year.
How did you come up with the title, Bright Side of Down?
A friend of mine, I was staying in New Hampshire with my friend Tom Pirozzoli,
who's a singer-songwriter and painter.
He painted the covers of this one and the last cover.
And he said I was packing away my down winter coat,
and I said I really like the way how I can pack this into my suitcase.
It could fit into the smallest space.
And he said, yeah, that's the bright side of down.
I love it.
I love it.
Now, it's Valentine's Day.
Of course you're going to do a song tonight for your lovely wife, right?
Yeah.
You better, darling.
You better.
Okay.
Should I go sit and sit?
Yeah, and what's the name of the song that you're doing?
It's called Outnumbered.
Outnumbered, John Gorka.
This is for my wife and my girlfriend.
It's the same person.
I was never a player
Maybe [E] in song but [B] not in love
On a wing and a prayer
I [C#] chased a dream I [F#] was dreaming of
[B] Suddenly you were there
Behind a [E] smile, behind a name
After that [C#] summer day
[F#] Never [B] be the same
You ask me [E] now
How [G#m] long love [F#] can be
[F#] I [C#] say I don't know
[G#m] But I will love one
[F#] Till you [B] outnumber me
[E] [B]
[E] [B] Inside it's rainy and cold
When you're a [E] thousand [B] miles east
My phone can't reach a soul
[C#m] And this night [D#m] has no release
I'd rather [B] buy than be sold
Even [E] my money [B] here won't do
I won't be [C#m] worth a thing
[F#] Till I get [B] next to you
You ask me [G#m] now
How long love [F#] can be
[F#] I say I don't [C#m] know
But I will love one
[B] Till you outnumber me
You [C#] are the one
[F#] Till you [B] outnumber me
[E] [B] [B]
[D#] [C]
