Back in the, I don't know if it was the late 50s, early 60s, I used to live in [D] Missouri
and there was an old fiddle [E] player up there that we used to play a lot with, named Cleo
Persinger.
[G] Cleo was a big old strap-and-tone feller.
He wore gallows about like this, you
know, and played a lot of great [Em] old tunes.
He had one of the great styles like that.
And his wife played the guitar.
And they played square dances up there [E] around Columbia, Missouri.
He lived in a little old town called Kingdom City.
And he told us one time, he said,
boys, well, you know where that's at.
[G] All right.
All right.
[F#]
So [E] one day he told us,
he said, boys, he said there's a fiddle contest out here in Weezer, Idaho.
And he said,
by golly, he [G] said, me and the missus going to go out there and get in it.
And he did
and he come back, my God, he won first place.
[Em] Come back there and boy, you never seen such
gallows snapping for a mixed year.
Carrying on.
He played that Boone [E] County Rag, and
he thought it [G] was the Kingdom City Philharmonic Orchestra going on.
I mean, he was not concerned
at all, at any [Em] rate.
So he says, well, he says, next [A] year, he says, we're going to go
[E] out, me and the missus says, we're going out to Weezer, Idaho, and defend our [Am] championship.
He [G] said, oh, boy, wish I could be there to see that.
[F#] And, [A] well, he come back and he was
a little bit on [B] the blue side.
He didn't do so well.
I said, [A] Cleo, what's the problem?
He said, well, he said there was [B] a, there was an old man out there with a car and had
a trunk full of records.

fiddling in all my life.
And he said, no, I'm not.
But I went and bought his record
and here it is.
So, so I put it on the turntable.
