_ _ _ [N] _ Hello, welcome to Guitarist Magazine. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ Well, first of all, it has to do with the pick. _ _
This is a very thick pick.
_ It's probably, _ might be like _ 3 1⁄2 or 4 millimeters thick tortoise shell, and it's
beveled on the edges too.
_ _ _ So, you know, _ this pick is actually quite, you know, thicker than normal, but _ _ _ _ you can
just hear the difference _ _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ between that.
[E] _ _ [D] It's _ [C#] _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ _ a very forceful style, and you need to play really aggressively. _ _ _
You can't play too far up on the sound hole, or you'll be getting a _ [Fm] _ [G] _ _
_ _ lot of string slapping,
so you need to play close to the [F] bridge, _ usually about almost equidistant between the end of
the sound hole and the bridge, and _ _ a lot of [G] downstrokes. _ _ _ _
[Am] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] And [C#m] if you're doing, if you move across the strings, it's a lot of _ [Am] what people might call
sweep picking, but it's not so much like, _ _ not quick like that.
_ _ _ [G] It's very measured, _ _ [Am] _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
that kind of thing. _ _ _ _
You rarely will do an upstroke when changing strings.
_ A lot of the licks are like _
_ _ [B] two notes on [C#] a [F#m] string.
_ [Bm] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _
_ [Cm] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
I mean, as Django Reinhardt only had the use of these two fingers, _ _ [Fm] he traveled around the
guitar not so scale, not so much in scale patterns, but more in arpeggios, and sometimes
broken arpeggios, [E] like, _ _ [Dm] _ _
_ [D] _ _ [F] _ _ [D] _ _ _
do that really [F] quickly with just two [D] fingers. _
[Em] _ [Dm] It's built off. _ _ _ _
_ _ [Am] _ _ [Dm] _ _ [G] _ _
_ _ _ [C#] _ _ [Bm] _ _ [G#m] _
[G] _ _ _ _ So, and there's [F#m] a lot of that kind of, _ _ [C#] _ [A#m] _ _
[G] _ _ where you just stay on one string.
_ _ _ [Em] _ _ [G#] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Fm] _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Another technique that Django would use a lot would be, _ _ [E] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ and that's like an up, down,
down, down.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F] _ [F#] _ [Bm] _ _ _ And you can do [C] that in so many different places. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
That's a [G] down, down, [C] up. _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ [G#] _ _ _ _ _
[D#m] _ _ _ [E] _ _ [F] _ _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ So, as far as technique, _ you know, the aggressiveness of the attack, and _ _ _ there's also a lot of turns,
you [C] know.
_ [G] _
_ A lot of [E] the, _ _ _
_ _ _ [G#] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ everything is intense. _
And these kind of [G#] chords as well. _ _
_ _ _ _ Again, _ _ _ on Django's left hand, these two fingers were pulled back _ [F] because they were burnt in
a fire when he was 18, and so _ he couldn't straighten them out, really.
_ But he could set them on the guitar for different chord shapes.
So that's why a lot of his chords [F#] _ _ would [D] _
_ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ _ [G] be like.
