[N] Hello, welcome to Guitarist Magazine.
Well, first of all, it has to do with the pick.
This is a very thick pick.
It's probably, might be like 3 1⁄2 or 4 millimeters thick tortoise shell, and it's
beveled on the edges too.
So, you know, this pick is actually quite, you know, thicker than normal, but you can
just hear the difference
[C] between that.
[E] [D] It's [C#]
[D] [G]
a very forceful style, and you need to play really aggressively.
You can't play too far up on the sound hole, or you'll be getting a [Fm] [G]
lot of string slapping,
so you need to play close to the [F] bridge, usually about almost equidistant between the end of
the sound hole and the bridge, and a lot of [G] downstrokes.
[Am]
[E] And [C#m] if you're doing, if you move across the strings, it's a lot of [Am] what people might call
sweep picking, but it's not so much like, not quick like that.
[G] It's very measured, [Am] [G]
[D]
that kind of thing.
You rarely will do an upstroke when changing strings.
A lot of the licks are like
[B] two notes on [C#] a [F#m] string.
[Bm]
[A] [Am]
[Cm] [G]
I mean, as Django Reinhardt only had the use of these two fingers, [Fm] he traveled around the
guitar not so scale, not so much in scale patterns, but more in arpeggios, and sometimes
broken arpeggios, [E] like, [Dm]
[D] [F] [D]
do that really [F] quickly with just two [D] fingers.
[Em] [Dm] It's built off.
[Am] [Dm] [G]
[C#] [Bm] [G#m]
[G] So, and there's [F#m] a lot of that kind of, [C#] [A#m]
[G] where you just stay on one string.
[Em] [G#]
[Fm] [Gm]
Another technique that Django would use a lot would be, [E]
and that's like an up, down,
down, down.
[F] [F#] [Bm] And you can do [C] that in so many different places.
That's a [G] down, down, [C] up.
[D] [G#]
[D#m] [E] [F]
[E]
[D]
So, as far as technique, you know, the aggressiveness of the attack, and there's also a lot of turns,
you [C] know.
[G]
A lot of [E] the,
[G#]
[E]
everything is intense.
And these kind of [G#] chords as well.
Again, on Django's left hand, these two fingers were pulled back [F] because they were burnt in
a fire when he was 18, and so he couldn't straighten them out, really.
But he could set them on the guitar for different chord shapes.
So that's why a lot of his chords [F#] would [D]
[F#] [D]
[G] be like.
