Start Jamming...
Well, I [C] have two sons and three stepdaughters.
[D] [C] And it has been really a long time
since any one of them wanted me to sing them to sleep at [Fm] night.
[C] So it had been years since I had sung or even thought
of this song.
So it was quite a surprise about 10 years ago
when the US Postal Service called me
and wanted to use my recording of this old Woody Guthrie
[Fm] song in [C] their Christmas television commercials.
And after I hung up the phone, I remember thinking, man,
this is perfect in the age of texting and tweeting
and twittering and whatever it is.
Woody Guthrie and I are teaming up to promote letter writing.
It's kind of the story of my career.
Well, the truth is once the baseball season is over,
I don't watch television at all.
So even though this commercial was fairly ubiquitous,
I never actually saw it.
One of the very first people who ever saw it
was my youngest son, who called me one November night,
I remember, from his [D] dorm room [C] at Chapel Hill.
And he says, dad, I think I just heard you
on a television commercial.
I said, wait a minute.
I am your father.
What do you mean you think you heard me on a television commercial?
He says, well, I don't know.
I'm not certain.
I was across the hall last night.
We were watching sports.
And of course, across the hall, their dad pays for cable.
And they broke for this commercial.
And all of a sudden, I heard this hammered dulcimer music.
And I'm sitting there thinking, come on.
What are the odds?
And I said, and?
He says, I don't know.
I said, what do you mean you don't know?
He said, I fell asleep.
I'm going to wrap myself in paper.
I'm going to dab myself with glue.
[Dm] Stick some stamps on the top of my [G] head.
I'm going to mail myself.
[C]
I'm going to tie me in a little red string.
I'm going to tie blue [G] bands, [Bb] too.
Climb up into my [G] mailbox.
I'm going to mail myself.

[G] [Am]
[B] [G]
[C] [G]
[F] [G]
[C] [D]
[C] Oh, when you find me in your mailbox, cut the string
and let me out.
[Dm] Wash the glue off of my [G] fingers.
Stick some bubble gum in my mouth.
[C]
[Fm] [C]
Take me out of my wrapping paper.
Wash the stamps off of my head.
[B] Pour me full of some ice cream [G] soda.
Tuck me into a nice [C] warm bed.
I'm going to wrap myself in paper.
I'm going to dab myself with glue.
[F] Stick some stamps on the top of my [G] head.
I'm going to mail myself.
