JOHN MELLENCAMP - Longest Days - Mohegan Sun CT - July 5, 2014 chords
Start Jamming...
[Ab] My [N] grandmother lived to be a hundred years old.
I was very [Abm] close to my grandmother and [Ebm] she was [F] pretty normal until she got to be like a [E] hundred.
Ninety-nine she was still walking around driving cars.
[Fm] She hit a hundred and bam, [Bb] you know, she got, that was it.
I guess that's what happens when you hit a hundred.
You know, [E] she's like, okay, it's over.
[F] But the last year of her life, I would go over to her [Bb] house in the afternoon and she,
she always called [F] me buddy.
She never called me John.
She always called me buddy and she'd say, buddy, why don't you come over and stay with me this [N] afternoon?
So I'd go over to her house, you know, and I would lay in bed with her, you know, in her bedroom.
And we'd talk and she'd tell me about all kinds of stuff, you know,
about what it was like growing up in the depression and all kinds of things that she believed.
And every now and then she'd go, you know, buddy, if you don't stop that smoking and cussing, you're not going to get anything.
And I said, I said, what are you talking about, grandma?
You're going to be a thing that [Em] fixes him.
He just walked in his room.
[B] I [E] don't have to change anything.
[Ab] And I said, you know, grandma, [Bb] life is about trouble.
I'm looking for [N] trouble.
[E] [Bbm] Probably [A] about [F] 40 something when this was happening, [Eb] you know, [N] and, and, you know, even at my age, I'm still looking for trouble.
So I said that to her, you know, I was kind of joking with her.
And she was just like, I didn't say something like that in a moment like this.
And what happened, you know, she [F] was old.
And so we had this conversation a [B] couple, three times.
But one [N] time she looked at me and she goes, buddy, we need to pray.
[Gb] OK, [Bb] no, no, get off the [N] bed and get on your hands and knees.
What?
So I had to get down on my hands and knees next to her and she started to pray.
And the prayer was going pretty normally, like [Bbm] any prayer that you would hear [C] when as a little kid, you know, and [E] then all of a sudden something happened [Ebm] and she started talking real loud.
And [Bbm] the next thing I know, she's gone.
[C] And we, [Fm] and Buddy, are ready to come [N] home.
What?
Grandma, Buddy is not ready to come home.
Right.
Buddy has got a lot more sinning on his plan and on his mind.
Let's not forget, Grandma, that the fix is in, remember?
You're going to be up there waiting.
I'm going to show [B] up.
[Em] You're going to quietly get me in.
[N] And she goes, you really think you're funny, don't you, Buddy?
Then something really strange happened.
[Bb] It got really quiet.
And I kind of looked [F] at her and she [Bb] looked at me and our eyes met.
And her face took on [E] that of like [Ebm] maybe an eight year old girl.
And she [Bb] looked at me and she said, you know, Buddy, [Gbm]
you're going to find out real soon.
[E] Sooner than you think.
But this life is short, even [G] in its [Gb] longest days.
[A]
[D]
See
[G] that one [D] going down?
Yeah!
[G] [D] Good
[G] one.
My vision was true in my [D] mind.
[Bm] There was no way in the world I could [A] turn it.
[G] What would I [A] do, though, [D] if you said something?
[G] Everyone called out [D] my name.
[G] Death to [D] me was a mystery.
[Bm] I was too busy raising them.
[A] [D]
[G] Nothing [D] lasts forever.
And when [G] you're best at first, [D] it's going to pay.
[G] Sometimes you're going to get sick [D] and you won't get better.
[Bm] That's when life is short.
[G] Even in [A] its [D] longest days.
[G] You're telling God [D] you notice that [Gm] everything about you [D] has changed.
[G] The way that you move, [D] the friendship was there.
So you [Bm] keep on acting the [A] same.
[G] [D] Deep down in your soul you know.
You've got no flame.
[G] You don't understand [D] which way to go.
[Bm] [Db] Life [D] is short, even in [A] its [D] longest days.
All [Bm] I got here [A] is a ring in the air.
[Bm] Reflections of where [A] I've been.
[Bm] So you tell yourself [A] I'll be back at the top soon.
[G] You know there's nothing waiting [D] up there for [A] you anyway.
[G] Nothing lasts [D] forever.
[G] And when you're best at first, [D] it's going to pay.
But come a day [G] you get sick [D] and you won't be home.
That's [Bm] when life is short.
[G] Even [A] in its [D] longest days.
[G] Life is short, even [A] in its [D] longest days.
