This is a song, I think I wrote this just after I first started performing in this little club in Chicago.
It was called the Fifth Peg.
It was the kind of place where they let anybody get up on stage and sing.
So once I was assured of that, I got up.
[E] I [A] [B]
sang three songs for these people.
It wasn't an audition.
It was just like you could just get up there and sing.
They offered me a job.
I couldn't believe it.
I asked them how long they had to sing.
When they told me 60 minutes, I said,
I [F] went home and wrote the rest of the songs to fill up the other [E] 60 minutes.
[N] I'd been working there, it was just Thursday night.
I worked there, I was a mailman during the day.
I still didn't feel confident enough to quit the post office.
I was singing here on Thursdays and I was going down about the fourth or fifth Thursday I worked.
I thought, boy, I bet that same guy is going to be sitting there in the front row.
I better have a different song.
So I wrote this song on the way down to the club.
[E] I wish I could still do that.
Hey!

[B] [A] [E]
[A] [B]
[E]
All the snow has [A] turned to water
[B]
Christmas days have come [E] and gone
Broken toys [A] in faded colors
[B]
are all that's left to linger [E] on
I hate [A] graveyards and old pawn shops
[B] for they always [E] bring me tears
I can't forgive the [A] way they robbed me
[B] of my childhood [E] souvenirs
[D#]
[B] Memories, they [E] can't be bought
[B] They can't be won at [E] carnivals for free
[B]
Well, it took me years [E] to get those souvenirs
[A] And I don't know how they slipped [B] away from me
[D#] [E]
[A] [B]
[F#m] [E]
[A] [B]
[E]
Broken hearts and [A] dirty windows
[B]
make life difficult [E] to see
That's why last night [A] and this morning
[B]
always looked the [E] same to me
And I hate reading [A] old love letters
[B]
for they always [E] bring me tears
I can't forgive the [A] way they robbed me
[B]
of my sweetheart [E] souvenirs
[F#m] [B] Memories, they [E] can't be bought
They [B] can't be won at [E] carnivals for free
[B] Well, it took me years [E] to get those souvenirs
And [A] I don't know how they slipped [B] away from me
