[Fm]
[C] Hi
[Ab]
[Gb] [C]
guys, how's it going today?
I'm Robert from Dolphin Street.
Today I want to show you a cool John Scofield style lick.
And we're going to play this over a C [C] minor progression.
Or it's not a progression, basically.
It's just a static chord.
[Ebm] [F] C minor 7, or C minor.
[Ab] [G] And the lick sounds like this.
[Fm] [Abm] [G]
[F]
So let's take a closer look on the fretboard to see how we play this.
So the first part of the lick sounds like this.
[Fm] [Fm]
[D] And this is the 13th fret and the 10th fret.
I'm starting with my pinky and do a pull-off.
[G]
And [Ab] then I'm using the same frets but now on the G string.
And I do a pull-off here as well.
[Fm]
This is a very [Abm] common Scofield idea.
He uses this [G] quite a bit in his playing.
And [F] so do I, as a [Gb] matter of fact.
I think it's a really cool [C] little pattern for your fingers.
[Fm] And then after that, we have our finger here on the G string, [G] on the 10th fret.
And I'll kind of roll [E] it over to the D string.
[C] [B] [E] And I pick the first note and do a slide down [G] to the 9th fret.
[D] [Fm]
[B] [B] And after that, [Ab] I'm using my pinky here up on the 14th fret on the G string.
And I pick the first note and [G] slide down to the 12th fret.
[D] [D] [E]
[G] [Ab] And then middle of finger on the 10th fret, [Gb] pick that note.
And do a pull-off down to [F] the 8th fret.
[Eb]
[G] So then we get
[Gm]
[F] [B] [Abm]
[G] [C] [D]
And [C] then the last part is like this.
[Fm]
[Ebm] [Bb]
10th fret on [Gb] the D string.
Really short, almost like a ghost note.
And then switch strings to the G [C] string.
[F] And here a pull-off.
[Eb]
Down to the 8th fret.
[A] And then I do a slide [G] up with my pinky up to the 12th fret, also on the G string.
And then [F] ending the whole phrase on the D string on the 8th [Bb] fret.
Scofield [G] often does a slide down [E] when he ends a note.
[Bb] [Ab] Like that.
Okay, so that's the whole lick right [Bb] there.
[Ab] [Ebm]
[Gm] [Gb] Okay, so let's try and play this one more time really slow.
And see if [E] we can do this.
[B] [Gm]
[Fm] [C]
[B] [Abm] [G] [F]
[C] [F]
[Ebm] [G]
[D] A little bit faster.
[Fm] [Abm] [F]
[G] [Bb]
[G] [C]
[F] [F] [Eb]
[G] [Ab]
[G] [C]
[G]
[Cm] [Ebm] [D]
So there you go, a Scofield lick for you.
