One of my very favorite people and closest friend is Johnny Cash.
When I was nearly killed in Missoula, Montana and woke up a few days later,
Johnny Cash was standing there by the bed.
I never forgot that.
When we started talking about this show, John not only said
he'd like to do it, but he wanted to do something special.
A few days ago he
called and told me to meet him at the old Ryman Auditorium
here in Nashville, the original Grand Ole Opry.
He said he had a surprise for me.
Instead [D] of telling you about it, [G] we're going to show it to you.
[D] [G]
You'll meet many just like [D] me, upon [G] life's busy street,
with shoulders stooped [C] and heads bowed down
[G]
and eyes that stare into fear.
Our souls that live within the past,
[C] where sorrow plays all parts, [G] where a living death is
[D] all that's left [G] for men with broken hearts.
You have no right to be [D] the judge or criticize [G]
and condemn.
Just think, but for the grace [C] of God, [G] it could be you instead of him.
One careless step, a thoughtless deed, [C]
and then the misery starts.
[G] And for those who weep, [D] death comes cheap [G] to these men with broken hearts.
Oh, so [D] humble you should be [G] when they come passing by,
for it's written that the [C] greatest men [G] never get too big to cry.
Some lose faith
in love and life [C] when sorrow shoots her darts.
But [G] with hope all gone, [D] they walk alone, [G] these men with broken hearts.
You've never walked in that [D] man's shoes, [G] never seen things through his eyes,
or stood and watched with [C] helpless hands while a [G] heart inside you dies.
Some were paupers, some were kings, [C]
some were masters of the art.
[G]
But in their shame, they're [D] all the same, [G] these men with broken hearts.
Life sometimes [D] can be so cruel [G] that a heart will pray for death.
Oh God, why must [C] these living dead [G] know pain with every breath?
Just help your brother along the road, [C]
no matter where you start.
[G]
For the God that made you [D] made them too, [G]
these men with broken [C] hearts.
[N]
Here's my friend Bo Severs, Hank Williams Jr.
How about [B] it?
Thank you very much.
Thank you [N] folks.
You know, you're one of my heroes.
Oh, bless your heart, thank you, I appreciate that.
I don't love many men, but I love you.
Oh, bless your heart, thank you, Hank.
When I lay in the hospital in pretty bad shape, I knocked my white little brains out on the mountainside.
When I woke up, there was one fellow there that I knew real well, Johnny Cash, standing by the bedside.
And that was several thousand miles from where we are now.
We don't forget those kind of things, thank you.
You know, talking about gospel songs, and the thing that just did, these men with broken hearts, it's a great thing your daddy wrote.
Yeah, a lot of people don't realize that Luke the Drifter, and how many gospel songs he had.
I think the percentage was probably even greater than mine, that I've recorded over the years.
He did more gospel things than gospel songs that are still sung.
I hope someday to have a classic like I Saw the Light.
Oh, you've got plenty of classics.
Well, thank you very much.
But, I loved your daddy's work.
I never saw Hank Williams in my whole life, you know.
From 1950 through 54, I was in the Air Force.
Most of that time, I was in Germany.
But I was singing Hank Williams songs, they were playing them on the radio, you know, over AFN.
What was one of the big numbers?
Collage.
