[G] [A] Preaching was something [Bm] that I never set out to do.
I never [A] really set out to do worship either.
[A#] I sort of wrote worship [A] music just out of the [Bm] necessity that I wanted music [E] that I [D] understood
that reflected my [G] love for Christ.
[A]
That's how I started writing worship stuff.
[D] I've always had a real love for theology, and so as a worship leader I always thought
the greatest theologians that have lived have [A] generally been hymnal writers.
Guys like [Bm] Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley
[A] and [D] Cooper and just a multitude [A] of other great thinkers.
[B] Frederick Faber.
These [A]
great hymnals, this [G] great tradition that's been handed down to us in [A] hymology
were basically men and women [Bm] who just understood the [A] great [D] doctrines of scripture and understood
scripture and were able to put it to music.
So I just kind of had it as an ambition.
I want to [A] write songs that are theologically rich, that are [F#] Christ-centered, [A#] but that also
draw us into that place of [F] intimacy that music [A#] can do almost more [F#m] than anything.
And kind of out of [A#] my love for theology I just [Em] discovered that [A#] really what I have a
love to do is just talk about Jesus.
So it kind of developed on the road.
I just started giving little mini sermonettes when I was touring with telecasts.
[A] And just [E] kind of a joy in [F#] the process [D] [A] of communicating the gospel to people wherever they're at.
So when I went into ministry full-time [F#] down in California [A] I had the opportunity to begin preaching.
So I was kind of splitting [A#] my time [F#] between worship, pastor, church, [D] and then just [A] college ministry.
And I had found that preaching is [F#] so much harder than leading worship.
[A#] I don't know why.
[C] There's a real battle when you preach.
But it's developed over the last several years.
I've been preaching now for [F#] five years.
[D] Preaching [F] here at Door of Hope in this first year [E] of being a [B] lead pastor, [F#] where my primary
[D] role is teaching [A] pastor, [E] has been an incredible [A] challenge, super exciting, at times so frustrating.
The great thing [B] is that I still lead worship.
So if the [D] sermon goes really horrible, [A] I'll just say, well at least I can [A#] lead some songs.
[Bm] But it's a beautiful [D] thing.
It's a great [A] privilege.
And it's really a terrifying [E] thing [Bm] to be responsible to communicate [D] God's Word [A] to a new generation.
[E] [Bm] I love it.
[D] And I'm terrified by it all [A] the time.
I get sick every week [E] when I have to preach.
[A#] Still, it never really gets easier.
[F#] But [A#] I [D] wouldn't do anything else.
[A] [C#m]
[F#] [F#m] [D]
[A] I'm through.
[E]
[F#m] I'm done.
[D] I'm done.
[A] I'm done.
[E] [F#m] [D]
[A] [N]
