Hi folks, I'm Ian Walsh with OnlineLessonVideos.com. Today we're working on a little tune called
June Apple.
It's in a fun key of A, kind of modal.
Here's a sample of me playing it at
110 beats per minute.

Okay, [A] [G]
[A]
[E] [F#] let's get started.
Let's review a scale for this tune.
Since I'm going to teach you
both octaves, which isn't too hard, we'll start on the low A on our G string.
[D] So right
here, [A] that's our low A.
And here's the notes, follow along with me.
A, [B] B, [D#] C sharp, D, [D] [F#] E,
F sharp.
Here's your G.
[D#] Notice how that's in the natural form right there.
Then we have
a full step to the A.
[B] Keep going, the same notes, different octave.
B, C sharp, D, [D]
[E] E,
F [G] sharp, G.
[G#] Again, keep it low, right next to the first finger, in this case on the E
string.
[Dm] And then A, [F#] and then B.
Okay, and let's work our way back down from there, playing
all those notes.
One, two.
[B]
[D] [F#]
[D] [A] Okay, and there's our [F] root, our A.
This tune, June Apple, is
in the key of A, so that's our root.
[G] We'll be using that low G too in the second part.
So let me show you the first little line, nice and clean these notes are played.
[B]
E,
G is a pickup note.
In the sample that you just heard me play, I start on the downbeat,
so right on the A.
So we play two pickup notes, E, G.
And then we play this.
[D]
Let's try that
one more time.
[D] Okay, right away we can start blending the E and the A together.
[A]
So experiment
with that a little bit and get your bow on both the A and the E string.
Okay, [F#m] try the
octave.
And now just play these two strings [Am] the whole time that you play this section
of notes here.
So we have one, two, three.
[A]
[D] One, [G#] two, three.
[A]
[A] One, two, three.
[D] Okay, now
before we [A] take a little rest here and move to the next section of this first part, let's
just say a little note on the bowing.
You can play up and down bowing for each eighth
note here, or you can start to level your bowing out and slur two or three notes at
a time.
[D] [F] So if you can see on your, I guess the bow side of the screen where you can see
my bow hand here, I'm either going to play a heavy up [A] and down, [D]
[G#] or I'm going to get a
bit smoother with that.
It kind of depends on the speed at which you're playing.
This
is a [F#] relatively simple tune, so it kind of tends to be played fast.
Anyway, so two different
bowing options you have there.
You can have [Am] that up and down [E] stiff bowing, or you can
have that looser slurred bowing.
Okay, [G#] let's move on.
