[A]
I [Bb] [Am]
[Dm] [A] was in my [D] house in West [Bb] London one day and the [E] phone rang and it was an American [F] voice
on the end of the line.
It was an American record [E] producer who lived in London.
I knew
him by reputation.
He'd written the [Eb] Esso commercial [E] which was quite famous at that time.
The slogan
was, [N] put a tiger in your tank.
[G] Anyway, I knew [D] he'd done pretty well out of that.
[N] But he
had one question for me.
He wanted to check.
He had supposed to go to the hospital.
He
said, I don't know.
He said, how old are you?
I [B]
[Am] can't remember what he said.
[E] He said, because
I've got a [Db] song that I think would be right for you and I'd like [N] you to consider it.
So
he sent it round to the house and [Eb] I was listening to it the next day thinking up reasons why
I shouldn't do it.
[Ab] I do that quite a lot, think [Bb] up reasons.
[Gb] [C]
In truth, I think I became
a [N] professional musician after I left school just so I could stay in bed.
[A] There's a lot
of truth in that.
And yeah.
[N]
So I was listening to it [D] and it wasn't the grossest demo [Fm] I'd
ever heard really.
And [B]
I didn't really do other people's songs at that time.
[N] So I wasn't
wildly enthusiastic.
But round [F] at the house that day there happened to be a young lad
who worked [E] at the Moody Blues record shop.
[N] Yes, we had a record shop in Caledonia.
Not
for a lot of people, but people would come and listen to the records in our shop in comfort
with good vibes and then [Ab] go down the road and borrow them from [D] my own sheep.
But [Am] anyway, this young lad was round the house, he'd come round [F] for a few minutes or something
and [Gb] he was making a cup of [C] tea in the kitchen.
And by the time he got [E] to where I was playing
[F] this demo again, [C] he stood there and listened to it all the way through really [Fm] carefully.
And when it finished playing he said to me, you [A] ought to do that mate.
He said, that's
perfect for you.
[Am] And I said, you think?
He said, yeah, you ought to do that.
[E] And so what
else was I doing?
Not much.
I went down to this [Fm] little studio called Abyssinian behind
Octave Street and I met [F] a guy called Jeff Wayne [A] and his [Gb] engineer who was [E] confusingly
more so than Jeff.
[N] One with a J and one with a G.
And they [F] were working on a musical version
of the HG Wells story of the War of the Worlds.
And [Dm] it was great.
And I knew [B] a lot of musicians
that were on [N] this project.
And I did this song that we're going to play for you now.
And a couple of days later he called, [Gb] Jeff with a J, called back and said, [Eb] there's another
song on this that I'd really like [F] you to do as well.
So I did that as well.
Then I heard
[Bb] absolutely nothing for [N] at least 18 months.
And the phone rang [Ab] again 18 months later [N] in
my house.
And I rushed to pick it up.
And it was a promotion guy from CBS who I knew.
And he said, do you remember that thing you did with Jeff Wayne?
And I said, yeah, sure.
Nobody ever called.
I've heard anything more about it.
[B] And he said, well, it [Bb] was released
and it's in the lower end of the [Ab] charts.
And if you do top of the pops this week, it'll
get in the top 30.
We'll all [D] have fun and it'll be [Db] great.
And I did.
[Ab] We've all had fun.
And [G] it's been absolutely beautiful.
[N] And it's been a great gift.
[Dm] We seem to [Bb] be able to go
anywhere in [Ab] the world and [G] play it and people seem [B] to know it.
[D] And I'm privileged to have
done the original version of this, sung the original version.
And this is called
[N]
[Dm]
The summer sun is [A] fading as the [C] years go.
[Bb] And darker days are [F] drawing near.
[G] [C]
[Bb] The winter winds will be [C] much colder.
Now you're [Dm] not here.
I watch the birds fly south [C] across the autumn sky.
[Bb] And [Dm] walk by a [Gm] moth and they [C] disappear.
[Bb] I wish that I was lying [C] with them.
Now you're [Dm] not here.
[Bb] Like the [F] song through the [Eb] trees you came [Dm] to love me.
[Bb] Like the [Dm] song through the [F]
[Eb]
trees you came to love [Dm]
me.
Through autumn's golden gown you [C] stick your cover away.
[Bb] You always [Gm] loved [F] this one [C] more than the [Gm] others.
[C]
[Bb] Those small dreams lie [C] amidst you now.
Cause you're [Dm] not here.
Cause you're [C] not here.
Cause you're [Dm] not here.
[C]
[Bb] [Am] [Gm]
[F] [C]
[Bb]
[C]
[C] [Dm]
[C]
[Dm]
[Bb] Like the song through the [Eb] trees you came [Dm] to love me.
[Bb] Like [Dm] the leaf on [Eb] a breeze you blew [C] [Am] [G]
[Eb] away.
[Bb]
[Dm]
[D] [Dm]
A gentle wind falls softly upon [C] weary eyes.
[Bb] [F] Hesitant to hide a lonely [G] tear.
[C]
[Bb] My life won't be forever.
[C]
Cause you're not [Dm] here.
Cause you're not [C] here.
Cause you're [Dm] not here.
Cause you're [C] not here.
Cause [Dm] you're not here.
