[C] Hey [Em] everybody, it's me Karina and in this video, I'm gonna show you how to tune the [Eb] kalimba.
This [Gm] tutorial has 3 parts, things [Bb] needed, target notes, [Dm] and the tuning process itself.
[Eb] So let's proceed.
[Gm]
To start, let's have the following [Bb] things ready.
Your [F] kalimba.
Tuning [Eb] hammer, this is for adjusting [Gm] the pitch of the tines.
[Bb] Tuner application, [F] this will detect and display the pitch of [Eb] the tine when plucked.
I [Gm] personally use the G-Strings [Bb] application.
[F] Earphones mic, this one is optional, [Eb] you can place this near the sound hole and [Dm] this will
help the app to detect the pitch easily.
[F] And that's it, let's now go to [Eb] the next part, target notes.
[Dm]
Before actually tuning your kalimba, you wanna know [F] first what your 17 target notes [Eb] are,
what note each [Dm] tine is supposed to be tuned to.
Since most kalimbas [F] are in key of C, I [Eb] suggest you start tuning from the [Gm] middle C and work
your way [Bb] alternatively to D, [F] E, F, G, and so on.
[Eb] [Gm]
Theoretically speaking, it should [Bb] sound the same with the red mean.
[Dm]
So our target notes [Eb] are C4, [Gm] D4, E, F, [Bb] G, A.
[F]
And now an [Eb] octave higher with C5, [Gm]
D5, E5, [Bb] F, G, [F] A.
[G] Getting [Eb] higher with C6, [Gm] D6, E6.
[Bb] As you can notice, our target [F] notes have the same set of notes, [Eb] only the octave is [Gm] getting higher.
Now that we [Bb] already know our target notes, let's go [F] with the tuning process right away.
[Eb] So I have [D] detuned some tines here so we can tune it again.
I'm gonna place our target notes here on the upper part of the screen.
Let's start with C4 tine.
Plug the tine and the app will display what note it is [Am] in.
As you can [A] see, the app needle points to C4, which is correct, [D] it turns green, [B] meaning
this tine is in tune.
[Gb] So we'll mark it done.
[A] Next [D] is D4.
[A] The app displays D [Em] note so this tine is [A] also in tune.
Next is [E] E4.
This one's also [D] correct.
[A] Let's try again.
Okay.
[D] Now, with F4.
Oh, the [Em] needle is pointing to [A] F sharp [Em] instead of F4, [D] which is our target note, right?
[Em] So what does this mean?
[D] Let's take a look at our target notes.
Which are, by the way, the white keys in the piano.
[B] I just wanna show you [Db] that F sharp [D] lies [A] here between F and G.
So we have this basic formula to remember.
The following notes at the right side of our target note have higher pitch.
This is when we [D] have to tune it down.
The notes at the left side have lower pitch [E] so we have to tune it up.
In [D] this case, F4 is our target note.
But the needle points to F sharp, which is at the right side of F, [A] and therefore in a higher [D] pitch.
That's [Dbm] why we have to hammer the tine down.
[D]
[Em] [Db] [Dm]
[A] [Dm] [Em]
It's a [Dbm] bit lower so I'll tune [Dm] it up a little.
[A] [Dm] [E]
[F] And [Dm] now it points at [A] F4.
Next is G4.
Again.
Next is A4.
This is [D] also good.
[Dbm] Let's try [D] B4.
So [Gb] it points to A sharp [A] instead of B.
[D] Check again our target notes.
A sharp is at the left of B [G] so it has a lower pitch.
[Dm] Hence, we have to hammer [D] the tine up.
[Am]
[A] [G] [F]
[C] So let's check.
[Am]
[G] We [F] got it close to [C] B but we still have to get a little higher.
[G] [F]
[C]
A little [G] more to the center.
Oh, [D]
[A] [G]
[D] [C]
[Am] I overdo it.
Let's tune it down a little.
[A]
[G]
A little more.
[A] [C]
[G]
So yeah, we finally got it.
[D] Next is C5.
This is fine.
[C] Next.
[D]
D.
Correct.
Let's go with [C] E5.
[D]
The needle points to F.
F is higher than E so we have [Dm] to tune it down.
[G] Let's see. Again.
[F] [C]
[Am] Still have to hammer it [G] down until it displays E.
[F] [C]
[Am] Okay, we're getting closer.
[A]
[F] [C]
Alright, we're [G] done.
So just remember our target [F] notes and the basic formula [C] and I'm sure you can already do it.
I hope you learned something from this video guys.
Thank you so much for watching.

[A] [Dm] [Em]
It's a [Dbm] bit lower so I'll tune [Dm] it up a little.
[A] [Dm] [E]
[F] And [Dm] now it points at [A] F4.
Next is G4.
Again.
Next is A4.
This is [D] also good.
[Dbm] Let's try [D] B4.
So [Gb] it points to A sharp [A] instead of B.
[D] Check again our target notes.
