Karrin Allyson - Many A New Day: Karrin Allyson Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein (Behind the Scenes) chords
Start Jamming...
Many [Bb] a light lad [A] may kiss [Ab] and fly, [G] a kiss [E] gone by [Am] is
[Eb] bygone, [D] [G] never have I asked [C] an [F] August sky.
[D] These songs are [Em] universal, really, and [F] not just to Americans, [A] I think, to [Bb] the whole world, I hope,
and [D] it [G] feels [D] universal to me, too, to sing them.
[Gm] Many a [Bb] new day will [C] dawn [A] before I [D] do.
[A] [F] When this came up, [Bb]
[Gb] we happened to be on the [E] same [Eb] bill at a [E] concert in California.
[Eb] She asked me, [Ab] would you consider?
I said, yes, of [A] course.
So that was kind of the beginning.
I was [Eb] very excited.
[Dm] [A] She's a really great singer.
[Ab] I'm just a girl who can't [A] say no.
[Eb] I'm in a terrible
I've [A] always wanted to work with Kenny.
[E] [Cm] He's such an elegant, soulful player.
[A] When you get a player like [Eb] that, it almost doesn't matter what else you have with you.
[Dm] It's sort of a little big band.
[Eb] He said he'd love to do [Eb] it, but he would really like to [Dbm] have a bass player, too.
So [Bbm] immediately thought [F] of John Patitucci.
[Eb] When they sounded me about [Gb] doing this record and said, [Bb] [Ab] it's you and Kenny Barron,
and [A] the music was supposed to be Rodgers and [Eb] Hammerstein, which is incredible songs,
I [Db] said, of course, [Gb] yeah.
I'd love to check [Bb] that out and see what happens.
I don't want [A] to kiss him back.
[Eb] [Ab]
It's all great music, [Dm] all very beautiful music.
[Cm]
Most of it I'd never [G] really played before, [E] but I had heard it a million times.
[Abm] I have loved Rodgers and Hammerstein for years, [Gbm] since I was a kid.
[Ab] A lot of it was about Hammerstein's lyrics,
because [Bb] I love the way he [B] speaks about, [G] or at [Bb] least infers, justice [F]
[Gm] issues.
The music is deep, yet it's light.
It's a [F] beautiful mix.
[Db] Jigs and geese and [B] ducks better scurry when I [Dbm] take you [G] out in the surrey,
when I take you out in [Dm] the surrey with the fringe [Em] on top.
We went [Ab] down the list, and the songs were incredible.
[B] And then when I knew it was Kenny and [Bb] John, I thought, okay, so [B] this can be,
[C] we can even lean less on the arrangements [Bb] and just have these little ideas.
[Abm] The wheels are [Eb] yellow, the upholstery's brown, the dashboard's [Ebm] genuine [Gm] leather.
With ice and glass [Dm] curtains you can roll right [C] down,
in case there's a change in the weather.
Even if you have [Bb] arrangements, when you have that [Gb] intimate a group, [Db] it's very fluid.
[G] And sonically, when you have three elements like that, you can make them [Bb] big.
[Db] So [C] these are [Db] fun projects because they're [C] the intimate kind.
Beh bah [Em] bah dum boo bop, beh dee dee dee dee [Gb] dee dee dee dee [Em] ah,
bah boop bah [G] bah way bah doop dee ah, [Ab] be do [Am] dee.
[G] Boo bah doop dee doop dee, doop boop bah [Em] bah doop, doop [Db] doop boop beh.
[A]
Beh boop bah boop [D] bah doop, boop [C] boop boop [D] beh.
[G] Karn is [D] [Ab] someone with a lot of [Am] musicianship.
She can [Ab] communicate things to us in a [G] way that speaks our language.
She plays piano [Cm] when she arranges [B] and when [C] she's delivering a lyric,
[Bb] she knows what she's talking about.
She [G] knows the story behind [Bbm] it.
That's more [G] fun for [Dm] musicians to work with a singer like [Ab] that.
[Db] [Bm] She's a great singer, [F] very expressive.
[E] She uses really [C] good material, [Em] you know, [G] which is important.
[Am] [A] You gotta have a [Bb] dream if you [A] don't have a [F] dream.
How you [Em] gonna have [G] a dream come true?
I'm always looking for songs that I feel like I can make a [C] contribution to,
[G] sing in my own voice, and not just [A] literally my own voice, but within [G] myself,
and that I can make believable to the audience, to the [Am] listener.
[B] She's aware of the lyric, she's aware of the performance,
and [Bm] she's aware of the harmonies and [Gb] the groove.
[B] She's fast [A] enough to be able to respond [C] to it and bounce off [Db] it,
so [C] that [Cm] allows her to do great things.
[E] [A] Alone and awake, [Bm] I've looked at [D] the stars
The same [Cm] that smiled [D] on you
And [C]
[Cm] time and again [G] I've thought all the things
That you were [A] thinking too
I
[F] [C]
felt that the [G] recording went really smoothly and that we communicated well.
The guys were very sweet about [Bb] adapting.
She makes it [C] easy for everybody, you know, so [A] that helps you to [D] relax,
which helps [Bm] with the music, [Gb] so when it comes out, I [D] think that it'll [Bb] tell.
[Gb] You know, the vibe that was here will show up [Em] on the record.
[Gb] I think it's [Eb] fresh, you know, [Gb] so I'm looking forward to [E] seeing
how people [Gb] absorb it once it [B] gets out there.
[Gb] I'm just [Eb] like, yeah, I'm very happy to [Abm] be here, very happy to be [Bm] here.
I say it's going to be a very, [Am] very beautiful record.
[C] [D] In [G] these dreams I've loved you so
[Em] That [G] by now I [A] think I know
[G]
[D] What it's like [Am] to be [B] loved by [Em] you
[Bm] I [D] want to [E] love [A] being [Bm]
loved [C] by you
[D]
[G] [F]
[C] [G]
