KD Lang interview and impromptu opera, live on Later With Jools Holland 2000 chords
Start Jamming...
It's marvelous to have you back here.
Good to be back.
It's the third time.
I know.
It's marvelous.
You're dating me.
It's exciting.
That's a good job to keep going back.
Your new record, I mean, some people say it's a very summery, happy sounding record.
Would you go with that?
Yes, absolutely.
It's a California love letter.
Aha.
Is that where you live now?
Yes.
Yeah, I live in L.A.
That's good.
That's a love letter.
That's great.
What made you call it the title it was?
I found it in an Albert Camus quote, actually.
In the depths of winter I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.
And it really applies to sort of the emotional journey I took to finding the record.
The invincible summer really is my reinvigoration towards my music.
And it just feels good to be happy and making music, you know.
Yeah.
Did the recipient of the letter, were they really pleased to get the letter?
Yes.
I'll be so pleased.
They're somebody who went through all that trouble.
Those musicians are writing those songs.
Instead of just like, cheers, you did it.
You went the distance.
Yeah, yeah.
Thank you.
Yeah, no, it was happily received.
Tell me, is it true that you are a motorbike enthusiast?
I am.
What sort of motorbikes do you like to drive around on?
Well, I have one for every mood, really.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, I have a Harley, but I'm way over it right now.
Yeah.
Really over it, because in L.A. there's people with like fake ponytails on their helmets and shit.
Yeah.
I was just going to get one, but I'm not now.
Yeah, no, don't get one.
But I'm really stoked, because I just bought a 67 Triumph GR6.
Yeah, I'm so excited.
Are you a member of a gang?
No.
Gang of one.
Excellent.
Mono gang.
Excellent, I shall join them.
Yeah.
No questions club.
Excellent.
Now, who are some of the people that have inspired you?
Oh, Lord.
Everybody inspires me, good or bad.
I really spend a lot of time listening to the classic vocalists.
Peggy Lee was one of my big influences, Carmen McRae.
And then I go through my little infatuations.
I went through Country and Patsy Cline, and I went through the mamas and papas on this record.
And anywhere from A to Z, Donna Summer's Disco, everything.
Well, that's
Actually, yeah, you know what?
Those boys over there.
That's right.
The Webb brothers.
The Webb brothers.
Their dad.
Their dad.
Jimmy Webb.
Jimmy Webb.
He wrote them all, didn't he?
Yeah.
I mean, he really did, though.
I hope I'm not embarrassing you guys.
Up and away.
They're like
Yeah, you're right.
By the time I get to Phoenix
They're going to hate me.
The Wichita Lionel.
Someone left a cake, I [Bm] don't think,
[B] because [D] it took so long to bake [A] it.
[Abm]
[G] Wow.
[F]
[Em] [Dm] [A]
Wow.
Wow.
[G]
It's all perfect.
[Gm] Unbelievable, Katie.
Did you ever think of being an opera singer?
No.
Well, you've just become one.
Okay, good.
Thank you very much, Katie Lang.
[G] Well, look forward to hearing much more from you.
You wait there.
I'm going to go and introduce [N] the Webb brothers.
Katie Lang, ladies and gentlemen.
What a voice.
And you can hear more
