[E] Singin' Good [A] My Friend was one of the most unique songs I had heard in a long time.
I mean, only because, just all the layers of the vocals, it was a very haunting song for me.
And I knew when I recorded Singin' Good My Friend that it was one of the most unique melodies that I'd heard in a while.
But also, I knew that it was a record that I was going to have to treat with very delicate hands.
Because the story was so good, and the story was about just true love.
And how this guy sacrificed his whole life for this one [F#] guitar that he was selling to this guy.
And he realized later on in life that true love was more than the guitar.
And that guitar symbolized everything he had given in his life.
But here he was with his wife that it was inevitable that she was going to pass soon.
And it's unbelievable.
This guy goes and buys this guy's guitar and gets to hear this wonderful life story.
And I think that all of us, at some point or another, kind of long to be loved like that.
Like the person that's getting ready to die in that song is.
To have somebody talk about us like that.
And to have somebody care that much.
This person in the song is selling everything he's got.
He's selling this guy this guitar.
And that guitar has defined his life.
And it was loving his wife at that time.
And being at this point in their life, it was more important than all of it.
That's what struck me the most about that song.
Was just the heart that it had.
And the love story that the song had.
On top of that is this wonderful, unique melody with all these layered vocals.
And I knew that when I recorded this song that I had to treat it with very delicate hands.
And I wanted, when we got done with it, I told Buddy when we were recording this song.
I wanted the vocal to lead the track.
And not the track lead the vocal.
If that makes sense.
Because the story is so important.
And I went into it thinking that it was going to be one of the easiest songs to mix.
But it ended up being one of the hardest.
Because balancing those worlds of all those vocals.
And all the haunting layers and emotions that this song had.
It ended up being one of the hardest songs to mix.
Because it was so important to get everything just perfect for me.
And I obsessed over it for almost a full day.
And I think we got it.
I'm sure that later on when the record comes out I want to hear something like I always do.
That I wish I would have done different.
But I think that we achieved what we wanted to achieve with that song.
But it's just such a unique song for me.
And such a great love story.
The emotion coming from the person buying the guitar.
And the emotion that the guitar represents in the first place.
And the emotion coming from the guy that's selling the guitar is very powerful.
