I wrote this song with Tim Krekel, and [C] he's a really great [G] songwriter and singer that
lives up in Louisville, a good pal of mine.
[D]
And people always ask, you know, how do you write songs or what do you do when you get
together and you write with people and stuff?
And the way you should do it is that you show up, you know, say Radney and I are going to
write together, and one of us would have, we'd have an idea, we'd have, you know, we'd
have a chorus written already or we'd have a, you know, a melody or we'd have at the
very least an idea, you know, that we thought of coming over to the appointment in the car,
you know, kind of sort of thing.
But with Tim Krekel and I, the first time we ever got together, we sat down and we didn't
even have a place to write.
We said, well, [Eb] where do you, you know, we want to write at your house.
I said, well, we can't write at my house.
I don't know what was going on.
And he lived in Louisville, so that would have eaten up our writing time right there,
driving from Nashville to Louisville to write.
So our publisher, Brownlee Ferguson, said, well, you can write at my house and I'll have
beer in the refrigerator.
So he said, all right, we'll write at your house.
So we go over to Brownlee's house and we sat down and we got ourselves a beer and we sat
there and I said to Tim, I said, well, you know, do you have anything?
He said, no.
[B]
He [Eb] says, you got anything?
And I said, uh-uh, not a thing.
So that's how we started out writing and we've written a bunch of songs together and that's
how we continue to show up to all our appointments.
Now, we even, one time we showed up with absolutely nothing and I said, you know, I don't even
feel like writing.
He said, me neither, let's go to a movie.
So [G] that's how Tim Kreckle and I worked together.
So this is a song that miraculously got written somehow.

[C] [G] Now the deed is done.
And the smoke [F] is clear from the ash of [G] sun.
Glimmer of the truth appears.
It's a bitter pill, a [G] little hard to [F] take.
I'll be the first to [G] claim my syrup mistakes.
[C] But [Em]
the way [A] things stood, I did the [C]
best I [F] could.
Did not, [G] did not, [A] did [C] not try [Bm]
and make [Am] amends, [C] be your friend.
[F] Did not, [G] did not, did [C] not.
And we look close, an opportunity is [F] planned.
All that's left to do [G] now is look back and [A] shake our [C] heads.
And [G] it breaks my heart and it makes me [F] mad.
And I'll never know [G] how, so good when, so bad.
[Em] But the way things [Am] stood, I [C] did the best I [F] could.
Did not, [G] did not, [A] did not [C] [Bm] try and make [Am] amends, [C] be your friend.
[F] Did not, [G] did not, did [A] not.
