[E] [F] [N] Aloha, I'm Kimo Hesey.
I thank you very much for the input that you have provided us with
regard to the videos that we do.
I want to respond to several of those that have to do
with right hand technique and basically just strumming.
And several of you have said,
hey, why don't you do a video on strumming technique and show us the different kinds
of strums.
You know what, I'd be glad to do that, but not yet.
Because for me to do that
right now is a little bit premature.
I want to tell you that I think when we discuss right
hand technique, especially with regard to strumming, that we're talking about rhythm.
Rhythm.
And the question becomes, how do we produce a correct rhythm?
The reason why I
suggest you not start just with technique is if you start with technique, then what happens is
you take that, or you may have a tendency to take that technique and just force it.
So the one and only idea I would like to provide you in this video is take the rhythmic inspiration
from the song that you're doing.
Say that again.
Take your rhythmic inspiration.
Okay,
let me show [F] you what I mean.
I've been working on the railroad.
[Gb]
[Ab] [Db] What I mean when I say take
the rhythmic inspiration from the song that you're playing is, the song goes rhythmically.
[Ab] [Gb]
Take the inspiration from the song.
So strumming technique-wise, what I like to do is just use
these two fingers because I'm too lazy to use these other three, and as a result of that,
they get in the way.
And all I'm going to use is a pincer movement.
And watch now as I use
that pincer movement just to replicate the rhythm of the song.
[F] [G]
[Gb] All I'm going to add is
my finger.
That's the rhythm of inspiration.
Listen to what happens now when I put [B] the
[F]
[Ab]
rhythm in.
Now I'm going to take my finger and play the right chord in sequence.
[F]
[Bb] [F] [N] Okay,
remember this.
Take the rhythmic inspiration from the song that you're playing as opposed
to a certain strumming technique or strumming style.
Once you have created the proper rhythmic
inspiration from the song, then you can add a little bit of enhancement through strumming
technique.
But the first thing to do is establish the goal in your mind with regard to rhythm,
and that is take the rhythmic inspiration from the song that you're playing.
If you have any
questions, give me a call.
Send me an email.
Talk to me on Facebook.
Whatever.
But when you
practice, don't ever guess.
If you have a question, give me a call.
I'd love to help.
Thanks so much.
