Hello, I'm Kimo Hasi, [N] it's nice to be with you again.
One of the wonderful things
about ukulele is that there's so many wonderful, wonderful aspects of ukulele.
In the course of doing the videos that we have been doing, a majority of
the things we talk about are technical, and there's a time and a place for that,
which is wonderful.
But one of the things we would like to do today, in this
session, is to talk to you about ukuleles.
Why?
Because I think ukuleles, and the
way they are made, because they're made to look better, they're made to sound
better, they're made so that they're much easier to play, are that segment of ukulele
which is making the biggest gain to the total ukulele garden.
And I think it's
worthy.
Periodically we spend some time talking about ukes.
Why?
Because a lot of
the Chinese starter ukes have dominated the market.
For a good reason.
They're
wonderful, wonderful ukes.
And they're very inexpensive, and you get great, great value for the money that you spend on them.
You spend 40 ukes.
But, ukes like the ones we have here are ukes that are not Chinese ukes.
Some of these are custom ukes.
Some of the ukes like this one is a uke that comes
right off of a production line.
Are ukes that we don't hear much about because
ukuleles are in such demand that we hardly have time to look and shop for
good ukuleles.
So one of the ideas, one idea I would like to leave with
you today, because certainly we'll address ukuleles another session, is there's no such thing as the ultimate ukulele.
So my earnest advice to you is play different ukuleles and try to hear and
listen to what is right about that ukulele because all these ukuleles,
every Cumbo ukulele has its own character.
I'd like to share with you today this ukulele.
This is a carbon fiber ukulele which means that there is no wood on this ukulele.
Made by my good friend Joe Nutwack of Blackbird Guitars and Ukuleles in San Francisco.
Let me say that name again, Blackbird Guitars and Ukuleles in San Francisco.
Basically what Joe does is when he receives the raw material, what he does is to put some magic goop on it,
makes it real hard, then he puts it into a mold and the ukulele comes out like this.
It's wonderful, wonderful.
And as I turn this around I'd like for you to see how really wonderful
and unique the design is.
Again there is no wood on it.
[C]
The sound hole is [Am] up here so you can hear
the difference in that.
[N] There's a tiny sound hole here on the headstock and the reason for that is
the neck itself is hollow.
So in order to prevent sound and vibrations from getting stuck in the neck
there's a tiny little sound hole in the middle of the sound [C] to come out.
And as opposed to the very [Em] first
carbon fiber [Dm] instruments that came out, I think this ukulele [G]
makes [E] a wonderful sound.
[C] [Dm]
[G] [C]
So it's very unique [N] and one of the other things I would like to tell you about ukuleles is
those of you who are in ukulele groups, you know sometimes when a group meets,
play somebody else's ukulele.
You see there's a different kind of session with all the different
kinds of ukuleles that are around them.
Again there is no such thing as the ultimate ukulele.
And so if you have any questions at all about ukuleles, please, please, please go down to your
music store if there's one close by.
If you live in an area where there aren't any ukulele stores,
write to me and I can help you find the information that you want.
Okay,
Blackbird carbon fiber ukulele made by Joe Luttwak in San Francisco.
[C] And I think this ukulele has, at least to me anyway, kind of a unique look.
And I think it has [Eb] kind of a European look.
So let me play something European for you.
Joe's [C] wife Christine is from France.
So let me see if I can play a song for you with a little bit of a French
