y'all.
[N] So look, I gotta say something real quick.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, hold on.
I gotta say something real quick.
When I was 20 years old, I was homeless.
I was 18 years old and I met a guy by the name
of Jerrold Wright and he was Seminette Venice.
I had never heard of what the Seminette Venice faith was,
but I was homeless.
And Jerrold and his wife let me come live with them
because I had no, like I was broke, homeless.
I had like a one year old son and I just had a dream.
That's all I had.
I had no money.
I had nothing.
I had no hope.
I had no possibility.
But listening to that sound,
all it made me do was think of him because it's so heavy.
And I know that it is his shoulders that I'm here on.
And every other man and woman that has walked
through this space, that your shoulders,
that you're standing on to be able to get a sound
that all you Negroes sound like you auto-tuned.
Do they not sound auto-tuned?
The sopranos sound auto-tuned.
It's like you're singing like you're freaking auto-tuned.
I have never, like you hear no rub.
There's no rub.
And it was so otherworldly.
It just made me deeply miss him.
Because if it wasn't for him,
letting me sleep on that couch,
I would never be able to be here
and to be able to experience the beauty
that has come from this space,
that has come from this denomination.
That this is my fifth time coming over.
Because I've been here many, many times
before, way before anybody even knew I was.
I was here with the church,
just sitting in the back waiting to have a chance to play.
And never would I have ever thought I'd be here
embracing this depth of beauty.
Like that moment right there was worth that flight,
that trip, and that hotel.
That moment right there, that moment right there
means more to me than you will ever know.
Because I respect so deeply where I come from.
And you just reminded me of where I came from.
Thank you.
That was brilliant.
That was brilliant.
