This week I'm going to show you a lick from Kenny Wayne Shepard from the song Slow Ride.
It happens at about 1 minute and 40 seconds into the song.
It's in the key of E, so if you're tuned down half a step on all your strings like
I am, that puts your box one shape _ _
_ [N] here at the 13th fret.
The lick that we're going to be taking a look at goes like this. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ That's one of those really identifiable Kenny Wayne Shepard licks.
I know a _ lot of people like to say, oh he's derivative, he plays like Stevie Ray Vaughan,
he sounds just like him.
Whatever, if you think they sound alike then you don't listen to enough of either of them.
This is one of the licks that I can instantly pick out when it's Kenny playing it.
I like his music a lot.
It's kind of interesting, everybody likes to debate whether or not John Mayer is any
good these days because I remember those exact same conversations when Kenny Wayne
Shepard first came on the scene.
But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what somebody who's never written any
songs thinks, he's still making music.
I happen to like his style a lot.
I like his music, I like seeing him in concert, and today I'm going to teach you that lick.

_ _ Alright, so we're going to start with a bend. _
_ _ So we're kind of resting on that bend after the end of a couple [Bm] things. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F] _ _ That's why we're going to pick [C] it up here.
[Bm] _
_ [E] _ _ [N] _ _ And after we bend up here on the 16th fret on the B string, _ we're going to walk backwards
[G] _ _ _ [Gb] down box one from 13 on the E string _ [Eb] down to [F] 16 on the B string to 13 on the B string.
[Bm] _ _ _
_ [G] _ Then we're going to do a whole step bend on the 15th fret of the G string, _ [A] _ _ back down,
then to 13 [G] on the G string.
_ _ _ But instead of continuing straight down here to the D string, we're going to have to go
[Gbm] back up _ to the [Bb] 15th fret.
_ [A] _ _ _ [G] _ _
[E] _ _ _ You see what [N] we did there, instead of going _ like you do sometimes, we _ [A] _ went_
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ So you [N] put that together, you _ _ _ [A] _ _ [E] _
_ get_
But you don't stop and land here, because Kenny adds this little twist at the end.

_ [A] _ _ [G] _ _ _ Think about at that point that you're starting a new lick.

We're starting, _ _ [Ab] so that's from the _ [E] _ 15th on the D string to the 13th on the D string,
[D] _ _ down [B] to 15 on the A string, _ _ [Em] [D] then back up _ [G] _
13 to 15 on the D [E] string, _ _ [G] _ _
_ _ and then [A] back up to
[G] that minor third on the G string here, the [E] 13th fret.

[N] So if you think about this in two parts, you've _ _ [A]

[Ab] And then the [Em] second part.

What you can do is hammer [Eb] on from the G string of the [A] 13th fret _ to these three notes, _ [Bbm] all
the [A] 15th fret on the [Ab] D, G, and B strings.
[A] _ _ _ And it's important that you get that hammer on there, [C] and [Eb] not [D] _ [E] just_
[Db] _ You can play it that way, but it sounds a little better if you get _ [Em] _ [N] a_ _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ _ _ All right, so let's just review.
