La Grange Lick ZZ Top chords
Start Jamming...
Hey gang [N] today, we're going to look at Billy Gibbons awesome lick from LaGrange
The one that he uses to start out the first the first line of the solo
Really an awesome line a good one to know and we're gonna go through it note for note
Show you a couple of variants too that you can use.
All right coming up in just a minute
Hey, if you like it, you know what to do
And if you haven't yet subscribed for one of these every week see you in just a second
All right gang.
Let's go over this note for note now
You can download the tab from the link in the description below, but you got to feel this one, man
All right, so get your guitar sounding kind of dirty and let's get to it.
Now.
I played the lick in the original C
C minor I should say
That Billy Gibbons did and you might be [Am] asking yourself
Hey, I thought that that ZZ Top lick or that song LaGrange was in a and you'd be right
That
Main riff is in a it's so it's an a minor type of blues
However [G] to play the solo they shift up a minor third from a to C and so it becomes a C minor [C] blues
[F] [N] Okay.
So what we're going to do is we're gonna play this is a lick that comes right out of the blues box
From the eighth position.
Okay, so we're playing a C minor blues box right here up at the [Cm] eighth fret
[C]
All right, so we're gonna be playing that
All right, so let me play the whole lick rather slowly
Alright, so here we go starting with the 11th fret second string
[Ab]
[C]
[A] all right, so
Let's break that down now a little bit
The first we're gonna start out on the 11th now.
I like to hit it hard and kind of rake into it
I don't know if I did that in the intro, but I like to do it once in a while
See how I did that
Alright, so and you're gonna bend that up and when you get it up to that whole step
Then give it nice vibrato
[D]
Okay, now here's the main lick
[Eb]
[Cm]
[B] Okay, the first part right here is just kind of walking down in triplets and this is all a triplet lick here
walking down by playing three notes of the minor pentatonic and then
walking one more down and playing three notes, [G] so
Those are [Bb] three now.
We'll go back up one and
[F]
[C] Down three, okay
[Eb] [F] [Gb] And then to get out of [Cm] it.
We're playing this
[N] Now that little bit is gonna be a little bit hard to pick so you want to practice that so we're playing eight on the second
[Eb] eight on the third [C] and
Ten on the fourth
[G] Okay, so practice that one that one's a little bit tough you'll hear that like Angus Young uses that sort of thing
[Cm] [Fm] He uses that in Back in Black a couple other places too.
All right to come out of it we do this
[C]
[C] So that's just a simple eight pull off or ten pull off to eight on the third and then ten a few times
[Abm] Okay, here's that whole first part again
[Eb]
[Cm] [F] [C]
[Dm] Now the back end of the riff is really cool to standard blues lick.
Let's play it nice and slowly
[Bb] [Cm]
You'll hear that all over the [G] blues those quick slides right so we're sliding here on the fifth string from eighth to tenth
[Bb] For string eighth and now back down [F] from ten to eight real quick slide
[Eb]
Six on the fifth [Eb] string
[Cm]
[F] Tenth on the fourth string, but you slide into it from the eighth.
Okay, so it's like this
[F] [Cm] [A] I put the whole thing together now.
All right
[C] [D] Have to get it a little bit wrong doesn't matter because it's the blues
Okay
Now let me show you a [N] variant of it
Now this variant is maybe a little bit easier to pick
And involves playing three notes on the third string.
You're going to play this
So the beginning starts out the same
[Ab] [Gm]
And now instead of [G] coming down to this
You play this
[F]
[C] [Gm] All right, so it's like this and [F] then when you get to the ten, you can kind of just do this finger roll
[C]
[G] And that works great
[F]
And you can play it I think a lot [Cm] faster than that
Or it's [Eb] easier anyway
food for thought Okay enough
[G] [Cm]
[N] There you go gang another lick to put in your trick bag.
Hope you enjoy this one from Reverend Billy
All right.
We'll see you down the road
