What's up, YouTubers?
We're back in Maze with Hunter and Ruben for another [Fm] Vertex vlog.
Two weeks ago we were [Gb] at the Greek Theater with Leon Bridges and Brandon A.
Thomas.
What up, bro?
Had to you.
And [Fm] now we're at Maze.
This is [Gb] where all the tours kick off, basically [Bb] everywhere.
We're starting [Ebm] a new series where we feature [Fm] guys in LA that are [Gb] really great players.
So today [Bb] we're with Ruben.
[Ebm] He's been in LA for [Fm] about five years playing guitar for [Gb] different artists, producing.
So we're going to go inside [Fm] and play some gear.
[Gb]
[Bbm] [Db] [E]
[Bb]
[E] [A]
[Gb] [Ab] So tell us what [N] you're doing these days.
Are you playing with artists?
Are you producing [Dbm] music?
For the past few months I've been [Fm] producing my own EP.
[Gb] I decided to [F] do less gigs outside of session work and just focus more on my own music.
I like being a side man, but at the end of the [Db] day, five years from now I'm just going to be playing my own music.
Right.
[Ab] Tell us a little bit about your [Gb] music.
What are you into?
What are your influences?
[F] Five years ago I came to LA and that's when I got serious about guitar.
LA [Gb] made me venture into [Bbm] all the old guys, [Eb] Larry Carlton, the [F] Legends.
[Gb] That was my first two years in LA.
[Bbm] And then [F] towards the middle of my LA journey I got really into [Gb] production.
My favorite artist duo is [Fm] a duo called Tennyson.
I don't know if you guys have ever [Gb] heard of them.
Best music ever.
For me.
[Bbm] It's my favorite type.
[Fm] It's like production [Gb] comes together with theory.
Okay.
Wow.
[Dbm] [Ab] [E]
[Abm]
[Cm] So [D] what you just heard was Ruben just playing the guitar straight into the amp.
So [E] we're just going to run through some pedals and just see how [Ab] with his music, how would he use them.
[E] Let's start with the dynamics.
At least for everything I like to play, my soul guitar stuff, [Eb] I'll always have that on.
[Ab]
[E] [Ab]
[E] If you're all about the [Abm] clean, like I say, then [E] the steel string is like clean central.
[A]
[Am] [Abm] [Dbm]
[A] [Am] [Abm] This just sounds full as soon as you [B] hit it.
It makes your [E] guitar bigger.
Modeled after a Dumbbell steel string, you want the Dumbbell Overdrive.
That's where the Ultraphonics comes in.
A brand new pedal you can buy at nonvertisfex.com.
[Bb] [E]
[Em]
[D]
[E] What's your approach to [Bbm] using gear, like dialing in [E] sounds?
I feel like the must-have rig for [Gm] any working guitarist is [F] to have a reverb, a delay, [Ab] overdrive, tuner, and a boost.
[E] That's all you need.
So [Ab] when you're going to this gig with Alicia, what would you go to?
[Eb] All her songs, [Abm] I don't play them clean.
There's a little bit of grit, just like how I prefer the dynamic distortion.
I mean, I'm not fully distorted.
You're not going to the metal ground?
Yeah, high gain is not my thing, but there's a little bit of grit [G] in every single song.
[E] No song is super gain.
No song is super low.
[Ab] I have this song called [Bb] Rose.
A lot of [Gb] people like it a [Bm] lot.
[E]
I like to [Gbm] play that with a little bit of grit.
[Gb]
[Ab] [Db]
[B] [D]
[E] [Ab]
[E] [Gb] [E] It [Abm] [D] just sounds way better.
[E] I prefer it with that [Gb] than clean.
A lot of people like it clean too, but [F] I'm not a clean person.
[Ab] Oh, clean.
[B] Alright guys, so it's time.
[Gb] We had a great time today with [B] M8s.
Hunter, love [C] this guy.
Ruben, what a [E] bro.
We'll leave all the [Gb] information down in the comments, in the description down below, [B] his Instagram, YouTube.
Give him a follow.
You won't regret it.
[Bb] He's the man.
Ruben won.
