One way that I try to get out of lick playing is thinking more in terms of taking either
a simple interval or a three note shape.
Here I'm going to alternate the idea of the fifth with some other [D] stuff.
[Ab] [A]
[Gb] [Bb] [C] [Abm] [Bm] [Cm]
[G] [Cm] [F] [Bb] Just do the fourth, [Eb] and if you can stretch it, add a third on [F] top.
[Eb] [Dm] [Eb]
[C] [E] [Gm] [Eb] You bounce off one pedal with a very staccato touch.
You want to find the sweet spot where it's not going to give you too much.
[Db] [A]
[Ab] [D] [Bbm] [Bb] [Eb] [Bbm] [Gm]
[Gb] [Ab] [Gb] I like this sound too, in this kind of setting, this [Fm] solo setting.
[Db]
[D] [Db] [Fm]
So I'm thinking of it still [Eb] as a D7b9, but the third's in the bass, which gives it kind
of a diminished sound or a Brazilian sound.
[D] [G]
The qualities of the chords are different according to what that top note is telling me.
[A] Here's the 11, [D] here's a root, [Gm] here's a fifth.
[E] That's cool too, but I could also [D] go to the diminished.
So you have a lot of power here at your fingertips, it's just a question of thinking on your feet
and knowing the possibilities that are out there.
That's one of the reasons why playing the organ is so fun, it's good for a control freak
