What's up good people David Taube here from nextlevelguitar.com. We got Tim Gilberg in the house
acoustic and
We've been getting tons of emails for some more acoustic lessons and strum patterns.
So here you go.
How about a nice easy strum pattern?
For the beginners out there.
Let's just do like a down down down up
Okay, so I'm gonna take my hand and just lightly touch the strings to kill.
I'm not gonna play a chord
We're gonna do some progressions too.
But at first you want to get this feel of this pattern
So it's kind of like get that foot going
[Gbm]
[Gb]
So it's [Ab] like down quarter down quarter one and an eighth note
Okay, remember quarter note is one note per beat and your eighth note is two notes per beat.
Okay, so you get this slow
down down
Okay, and you just keep repeating that
[Bb]
[B] Down down [A] down down [Eb] down down down.
[G] So I just hold the G chord.
It'll sound like this
Okay, so let's take one of the easiest chord changes out there G
I'm using it with four fingers and I'll put these on the screen as far as what frets are gonna play to [C] see add nine
[G] Remember to mute that low E string when you're playing that see add nine.
You don't want that ringing out
[N] Now if you're unclear on a G and a C add nine chord go to our website
next level guitar calm and we have on the main task bar click on chord library a
drop-down box will come down and then you want to go to open chords for the G chord and
Then there's a full minute and a half lesson to show you that chord up close and personal and then go to add chords
For the C add nine chord and you can check that and our chord videos are free
So it's a great way to get up close looks of these chords if you're not familiar with them
So we're just gonna go down down down up change
So it might be a little faster change than you used to
But this is gonna be great chord changing practice and strumming and rhythm and timing work.
So G to C add nine.
Here we go
two three four
[G]
[C] Change
See I nine [G] G
[C] See a nine [G] G see [C] a nine
[G]
Very good
[C] [G] [D]
[G] [C] [G]
[C] [G] [D]
[G] And [A] do that with you know
All the chord changes that you're working on anything like a minor to C [Am] a minor open [C] to a C major chord
Open same strum a minor two three [Am] four
[C]
See [Am] a minor [C] great work for your [Am] or change
[C] [Am] [C]
See [Am] [C] [Am]
[C] [Am] and then start stringing more chords together once you got that strum down
So let's go a minor
To [C] C
[G] the G major
to [D] D major
Okay, and on that G.
I use [G] a three finger G
[C] Because that's it makes it easy
You change from [G] that C to the G.
You don't have to turn your whole hand [G] over to get to the four finger G
[C] I could do it both ways, but I've been playing a while.
So you might want to start off
[G]
Practicing the chord change if you're not familiar with a C to G [C] change, it's a little harder, [G] but you'll get it
Just nice and slow back and forth every day practice that change and [F] eventually you'll have it in your pocket.
So let's go a minor
C G D
[Am] Down down down up.
Okay, nice and slow.
Here we go.
Two three four
[C] [G] [D]
[Am] [C] See [G] G
D
[D] [Am] minor [C] C
[G] G
[D] D
[Am] Beautiful
[C] [G] [D]
[Am] [C] [G]
[D] [G] [Am] [C]
Very [G] [D] [G] [Am]
[G] nice very nice.
So remember when you're strumming nice loose feel don't twist the wrist
Remember strumming is more in the arm big swath.
Keep that pick on that same vertical plane
Don't tail off with your strum and you'll miss the high strings
Everything that we've talked about with strumming remember you're building a solid foundation here
okay, and practice that strum with all your chord changes and
build up your [Ab] strum
library so to speak along with your catalog of chords and eventually
We're gonna take the ups and downs and throw them out the window because as you go on in our program
you'll be getting to some ear training lessons and
That will help develop your ear so you could figure out strum patterns by ear and you won't need to worry about ups and downs
because after a while thinking too much, especially when you get into faster strumming like sixteenth notes and
Mixing commingling sixteenths eighths and quarters.
You don't want to be like
Because it'll make your strum sound very sterile and robotic you want the strum to be free-flowing
You don't want to think about especially if you're trying to sing too.
So
It's okay at this level to be thinking about ups and downs
But soon we're gonna push that aside once you get your rhythm your timing and your chord changing down.
So this is an evolution
It's an evolution and you're playing keep up the good work.
Have fun
