[A] [Abm] [Gb]
[Db] Hey,
[Ab]
[Bbm] musicians, welcome [Gb] 2021.
Welcome to Sean Wilson Piano YouTube [Db] channel, where we transcribe
gospel [Ab] musicians, break down and analyze various gospel chords and concepts.
[Eb] And today I'm
doing a song tutorial.
I'm going to go going forward.
We're going to do [Ab] one of these a
month, one song tutorial a month, one [Bbm] transcription a month, where [Gb] we break down an actual musician
[Bb] and one [Db] concept where I teach you some [Fm] kind of a theory idea.
If you want [G] suggestions
of songs for me to [Fm] break down, go ahead [Gb] and send the link of that to my Instagram [Db] channel.
Keep in mind, [Ab] everyone's song won't get picked.
But I chose today's [F] song because it had some
movements in there [Gb] that seemed to stump some [F] folks.
[D] And there was a high demand for it.
So shout out to [Ab] CJ for [F] sending this dope [Bbm] suggestion for us.
[Gb] [Db]
[Ab]
Okay, [C] this version is very close to the original version.
This [G] version by [Db] Melvin Criswell.
It
starts off in [A] B, goes to C, [Eb] then goes to D flat.
[F] And by the way, a [Bm] side note, [Db] you want
to learn [Bb] in the key I'm teaching.
Every once in a while I'll see a comment, [Ab] hey, show me
this in C.
Listen, this is [A] 2021 folks.
Learn the song in the [Ebm] key.
Okay, if you plan [A] on
being a musician, [Db] you need to learn the craft.
[Gb] All right.
So [Ab] we got some crazy changes here
[Bb] that I want to break down.
We have one right [Ebm] here.
[Db]
[Eb] [Cm]
[A] [Ab] This changes in D [Gb] flat.
[Ebm] And then we
have another similar one that sounds just like it.
[Db]
[Ab] [C] [F]
Ah, that one's a little bit different.
[Bbm] Heard that bass note?
[G] And then we got some stuff at the end.
There's some nice [Gb] changes
there too.
[Ab] [Gb]
[F] [Bb]
[Bbm] [Eb] [Ab]
[Bb] Y'all go check out this version.
[F]
Dope version.
Y'all [Bb] check it out.
[Eb]
[Ab] All right.
So I'm going to do [Am] that stuff [F] on my website.
For today, I'm going to do the other [Bbm]
[Eb] changes
first.
[G] [Ab]
[Gb] Okay.
So here's the chords one more time.
[Db] [Eb]
[Db] [A] [Abm]
Okay.
So if you have to play that song
and if they asked you to play this version like they did with me a few weeks ago, [G] you
will have the chords.
You can [Db] learn them right here.
So the first chord is going to
be a D major add two.
The second chord is going to be an F, it's going to be an F seven
sharp nine sharp [Fm] five.
The next chord is going to be a B flat [Bb] minor nine.
[Db]
So [Fm] the
[Bbm] next chord
is going to be an E flat [Eb] nine.
Okay.
So, and then they go to an A [F] flat major nine [Ab] here.
Okay.
Now this is just, I'm playing it as an A flat major seven.
A flat major seven works too.
If you want the nine, add a [Bbm] B flat.
That's just an additional note there you can add.
Okay.
So
let's sound it.
Let's [Db] hear it together.
[Cm]
I added the 13 [Fm] here, the F.
[Gm] Now the note after that is
going to be, [F]
and this is a kind of a crazy chord here.
Requires a big [G] stretch as you can see down
in [Bb] my left hand there.
[Eb] If you're not able to do that stretch, play it rootless, which means leave
off the bass because your bass player can handle that G.
Sort of sound like [Db] this.
[Bbm]
[Eb] [F]
[Eb] And then the next
chord is kind of [C] crazy.
It's going to go like [Cm] this.
Okay.
Now this, this chord [F] is there.
Let
me let you hear it.
[Cm] Okay.
And then from there we have, [Eb]
now remember, [A] I want you to understand
[Ab] something.
I'm hearing, I'm playing what I'm hearing because the whole band is playing.
The
pianist could be actually playing something different.
I just want to kind of put that out
there.
I'm playing all the sounds I'm hearing.
I'm doing all the sounds I'm hearing.
So this
could be brass.
It could be a synth, but these are the voices [Cm] that in my ear are present.
Okay.
So after this, they go to a [F] flat nine, a flat nine sharp five, and an F.
Okay.
So the whole [Db] sound,
[Fm]
[Db] I did that wrong.
[Eb]
[Ab] [Bbm]
Where was [Cm] I at?
[Eb]
Okay.
And then the next chord after that is an A7 sharp [A] nine
sharp five.
[G]
Okay.
Don't play the A because the A, even though you [A] can play the A without disrupting
the chord, there's no A in the right hand there.
So [Db] if the next chord is [Abm] this, oh, this is a six
nine, A flat six nine chord there.
[A]
So, [Abm] [Eb]
and then now you're back to a [Db] regular O D flat chord.
And
then, [Eb] right.
[Db] So, [Fm] [Bbm] [F]
[Cm] [Eb]
[A] [Abm] [Eb]
[Gb] all right, let's play that with them.
[Fm]
[Bbm] [Eb] [Db]
[Gbm] [Db]
[Eb] [Db]
[Ab]
[Bbm] All right.
So
[Gb] there we go.
Okay.
So as you can see those chords work and I may have missed some notes
because I was [G] going so fast, but those are the chords.
Now I also wanted to talk about some
theory ideas.
You know, where are they coming up with chords like this?
I mean, what, what's the
goal here?
How can I do something [Gbm] similar?
[Gb] If I wanted to, [Gb] chords that, you know, have trouble
finding core progressions to use.
And I want to just kind of give you a little hint here, and I'm
not going to go too deep into this.
But if you notice the, the bass note in those chords is
moving up mostly [Db] in fourths, because if you look at that bass D [F]
[Bb] F [Eb] B flat E [Fm] flat A flat.
So all those
four notes there, if you notice they're moving upwards in the series of fourths.
And even when
they change and go [G] to the next part, [C] they'd use another series of fourths.
So, so the, the big
idea is that if you're having trouble finding progression, [F] try to, try to use fourths and see
how that works for you.
Let's, let's do happy, [G]
[C] happy birthday, da, [A] da, da in C.
[D] Birthday to you.
[Eb] [Cm]
[F] [G] [C]
Right?
This, and, and Quenelle Gaskins, I have a, I have a, a video on my website.
So those of you
who are on there, check that out where Quenelle uses the exact same principle, right?
I show how
he moves up in fourths.
How about another song?
Amazing Grace.
Let's do E flat.
[Bb] Let's do this.
[Ab]
[Eb] [Cm] Was blind, but now I'm a [D] scorpion force.
I
[Eb] see.
[Db] [Gb] [Ebm]
[Bb] [Eb] I should have ended on a major, but you know,
we're just making up things, right?
[B]
[Gb] [Eb]
[Abm] [D] [Eb]
[Cm] Right.
And these are, these are just things that
coming up right off the spot like that, you know, and mostly using that, that, that fourths principle.
So I just kind of wanted to kind of put that in there for you to give you some ideas
on just kind of how in my mind, a lot of these chord [Bbm] progressions are constructed.
[Gb]
Well, that's all for [Ab] today, folks.
Thanks again for watching.
[Eb] [F] So [Cm]
[Bb] don't forget if you're members,
we're going to give you those [Eb] ending changes.
In fact, we're gonna break the whole [Ab] down,
the whole song down for you.
So go [F] ahead and log in and check that out.
[Cm] And also,
if [Bb] you're not on the site, I may have a way on [Eb] gum road.
You can get that.
So thanks again,
everybody.
[Ab] Thanks for watching.
I [Am] wish you a great [F] year this year in 2021.
[Bb] Thanks again.
[Bbm] We'll see you next week.
