[Bb] Hey guys, today I am at Hilo Guitars in beautiful downtown Hilo, pretty close to the ocean,
pretty close to the mountains, and having a great time hanging out in Hilo and meeting
some really neat people, including folks here at Hilo Guitars, Ken and Brian, and some other
just [C] cool folks here yesterday giving guitar lessons, Fletcher and [Ab] some students and things
like that.
So I wanted to take a little bit of time today and go over [Bb] a really common
slack key tuning and then a song for everybody to start working on.
We're going to take a
look at a tune called Hula Blues, which is played lots and lots of different ways.
My
daughters have danced hula to this many times and we're going to do a kind of bouncy ragtime
version of it today.
This is a song written in the, I think in the 20s, goes way back,
maybe 30s or 40s, but in kind of the Tin Pan Alley era of Hawaiian music.
And first I want
to talk a little bit about the tuning.
We're in what's called a carapace tuning, which
is an open G tuning.
Now we've used open G for other songs.
We've looked at Rolling Stones
tunes in open G, it's a common blues tuning, but it's also the most common slack key tuning.
Now I'm going to look at some other songs later in C wahine, sometimes called Keola's
in C.
We'll look at one of my songs, Papa's Guitar in C, and a few others.
But today we're
going to be looking mostly at Tarot Patch and open G tuning, where we only have to retune
three strings.
The two E strings go [D] down to D, so we've got a D on the sixth string and
a D on the first string.
And then the B string stays the same, [Gm] the G string stays the same,
and the E string stays the same, because those are all notes that are part of [Bb] the G chord.
So what we're trying to do is make sure [C] that all six strings are tuned to one of the three
notes of a G chord.
Now of course the three [F] notes that make up the G chord are G, B, and
[Bb] D.
[D] This is going to open with a little pickup that comes in on the and of beat one.
One
and [Bb] two and three, four, leading into our first little melody.
So it's also done in
swing time.
Don't forget we've talked before about swing time, where the eighth notes are
not equal.
Well, we found one.
A little mini-toctel, metronome, flat.
These used to only come in
red, but they're really cool.
I remember all my classical guitar playing buddies used to
love these things, kept them close to them, always kept them in their guitar case.
So
we'll give this a try at whatever speed that is.
It's really hard to read these things.
It's not quite the [C] same as electronic growth.
But that seems like a good speed.
[Bb] One, two,
three, four, one.
