a look at that lick from Roundabout.
The rest of it probably you know.
I'll just play it quickly here.
[A] We're on the 12th fret harmonic,
E and [Em] top three strings, basically E minor chord.
And here, [F#m]
[F#] [B] and here.
[C]
[Em] [F#m]
And then we get [D] to the lick.
And the way I've always played this, he's probably using
finger picking.
The way I do finger picking, at least on this,
way back when I was young and I figured it out.
I just always use the pick.
And then if I need to finger pick, I use the middle finger
on the upper note.
Like right there on the first one, we're going to play the low D string and the
F sharp here on this E string.
[G] Then I pick where I can.
And on this part, you're just going to play this G,
[F#] and then [Bm]
[G#] roll on the notes like [G] that,
down [D] to the D.
[G]
[Bm] [B] So we go down this part here,
and we're going to play the C bass, and we're just going to come down
[C]
the natural notes there.
And so if you use that,
you can play that C bass and just use the pinky there.
Again, I'm using the pick down here,
and finger pick in here.
[G]
[Bm] And then
same thing here on the B and the D.
Open B string, pick that.
[Am] Like an A minor chord here, we got the low A,
and finger pick that C, play an A.
[G] G chord, play the G bass, a B D,
a B string, and a G string.
[F#m] Then you're going to play an F sharp
with the A.
And when I learned that,
I just listened to the top melody line and deciphered that.
Then I listened to the bass line, deciphered that.
It was way back when I was a teenager, and
I spent about a half hour trying to put them together and just playing it
over and over and over, and all of a sudden it came to me.
And ever since I've known it, it's just the power of repetition.
That's what you want to do.
The top line, we'll have a quick look at it, it [D] goes like this.
[Gm]
[E] [Bm] [Am]
[D] [B] So you're just
going down the natural notes, and then you're [Bm] going down
skipping D down to the open B, [Am] C down to the A,
and B and [G] G string.
It's like
kind of like that, [Bm] but I play it.
[Am] So it's just the natural notes,
and that F sharp.
[F#] [E]
[Bm] [G] [D]
And once you get that down, also the bass, you're starting on a D,
and then you're just going to go down the notes
D, C, B, A, G, and F sharp.
[Cm] [E] [D]
There's four notes [C] on the C, and then there's [B] two on each of these.
[F#] And then you [D] just put them together, whatever works for you.
Again, for me, I pick where I can.
If you're into finger picking, I'm sure it's easy to just do it.
[Gm]
[C] [Bm]
[Am] [F#m]
[D] [G] [C] [G]
[Am] [F#m] [D]
[D] [F#m] [E]
Now, just a word, when they come in at the beginning,
they're on E minor, [G] so they're playing that [E] [B]
type of thing [E] on the bass.
E, F sharp, [G] and G.
So [G#] he plays those harmonics on the acoustic,
you'll hear an E minor, the top [Em] three, [D] a D,
these middle three strings here for the D bar chord,
and the G.
[Gm] Now, he only plays these two [E] strings,
he doesn't get up to the [Gm] B there.
So [A#] you're emphasizing [Em] the E, the F [D] sharp, [Gm] and up to the G, [A] [Em] like that.
So you'll hear, and then at the end, he's just going to change that E minor
to an E major, [G#] bring that G sharp in to change the key
[D] and give the song an accent.
[E] [N]
The rest of it probably you know.
I'll just play it quickly here.
