Hey guys, welcome to learn to play it and this is a new YouTube video channel
And we're gonna be learning how to play songs from video games
on the guitar and we're opening this series with a great song from the game portal and
This is a song written by Jonathan Colton called still alive and we're gonna learn how to play it on the guitar right now
The thing to know about the [Eb] song is that it's not [Gb] really a standard verse chorus format
[Bbm]
It has a verse and it has what I would call maybe a pre-chorus
[Bb] It's not really a true chorus because the words are different every time through so I would think of them [Bb] as
Extended long verses but [Gb] the chord shapes are different [N] and the great thing about this song that has a really neat key change
That is almost unnoticeable and that's a testament to how well written the song is and and mr
Colton's talent as a songwriter
Okay guys to learn this song
We have [Eb] to learn some chords and I'm sure a lot of you guys already know these but for those of you who are new
To the guitar.
We'll walk through them.
[Gb] The opening chord of the song is D
[D]
And it also switches very quickly to a B minor and [A] we're going to do that only by dropping our fourth finger on
the fourth fret of the [Bm] G string and
We just strum the top three strings of the [Bb] chord.
In fact the beginning of the song is just on the [D] top three strings
[Bm]
Just like that.
There's [Ab] also an E minor, but we're not going to [Em] play it in the conventional
[N] E minor sense that we know we're gonna grab a D minor shape and move it two frets [Em] higher
And play it just like that just [Ab] the top three strings we have any [Em] minor chord and
Then also [Db] an a chord and we don't have to grab the whole a chord at the beginning because we're again just playing the [A] top three strings
So I'm just holding down string two string
Three on the second fret and then an open first [Gb] string and [Gm] that is the whole first part of the song
Then we transition to the new key B [Bb] flat
Is our transition chord [E] I'm barring on the third fret of [A] the D string G [Ebm] string and B string and
Then just holding [D] down the fifth string or the a string only [B] with my first finger on the [Bb] first fret
And that's B flat then we have [F] F
Which you can do it as [C] a full bar chord.
You can do it this way
[F] Do it this way
Or [Bb] if you're Jonathan Colton, you can cheat with your thumb
[F] And I [E] can't really do it as well as he can so I'll just [F] stick to
This version of [B] F if that's okay some [Ab] other bar chords to be aware of [G] G minor
[Gm] There's really no easy way to play this one
[Ab] You can also just have your third finger on the fifth fret of the D string and then bar [Gm] the other three
strings with your first finger I
Think you're lacking a little bit because you're missing the bass notes of the song
And
This chord is used during a part of the song where you're doing a lot of strumming
so I think it's worth it to try to
Get that bar [Eb] all the way across and a quick word about bar chords.
You don't have to
[N]
Get your whole finger all the way across you want to plant
Sort of about the segment under this knuckle to just below the nail and that's the part where you want to put pressure
[Cm] Especially the outside string because the in the [Db] strings in the middle are being covered by [G] these fingers
[Gm]
So good [Ab] luck with learning that and then [C] also see
[Bb]
Okay, [Gm] let's do the song [Bb] let's see how it goes
[D]
[Em]
[A]
[D]
[Em]
[A] [Bb]
[F] [Bb] [F]
[C] [F] [Gm]
[C] [E]
[A] [D] [D]
[Dm]
[Bbm] Okay, that's not an entire pass to the whole song
but that's the [D] transition from the D section to the F section you basically do that three times and
There's a part of the middle where you get really loud and strumming to [N] use the Joss Whedon word
In the beginning part of the song and you just play the same thing and [Bb] instead of picking the strings you just strum [D] it
[Em]
[A] [D]
[B] Just like that
[Ab] I hope that helps out good luck practice these chords and start learning how to play still alive.
We'll see you next time
[D]
