[F#] [B] [F#] Hi, this is [N] Bert Boreth coming to you live from Leon Russell's tour bus where we get
a rare glimpse inside the legend of Leon Russell.
It's a thrill to meet you, Leon.
Thanks for talking to us.
Well, thank you.
It's nice to have you back in the Woodstock, Illinois area.
Last time you were here in Crystal Lake, I know your bus broke down.
You almost never got out of here.
It breaks down every week.
Sitting on a highway in a broken van?
Exactly.
All right.
Anyway, it's just a thrill that you're going to be here at the Woodstock Opera House.
Now, who's in your band this time around?
I know your son and daughter are with you most of the time.
My son is not here.
Two of my daughters are singing background and two drums and guitar and bass.
We [Gm] play some of my songs and then songs by people that have influenced me in some way.
[E]
We do a couple of Ray Charles songs and we do some Roland songs.
Just odds and ends.
I remember you also used to do the tribute to Little Richard with the Crystal Closet
Queen a long time ago.
Yeah, I'm an old man.
It takes too much energy to sing that song.
What's your highlight of your musical career?
What's your favorite?
Is it now with your kids or what is it?
Well, it's great working with the kids.
I love the family band deal.
One of the most exciting times I think I had was making my first album in London playing
with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Steve Wynwood.
We're pleased to have with us Sugaree [N] Bridges.
How is it performing with your dad, traveling?
You travel pretty much every week?
All year round.
Wow.
And I love it.
And this is the first time I've seen you with your sister.
Oh yeah, she started about seven months ago.
It really sounds fantastic.
Well, [E] hopefully.
So, now you're remarried obviously and you live in Nashville.
Now, what happened to Mary?
I wouldn't hazard a guess.
Uh oh, they were getting into territory.
He doesn't want to cover.
Well, hey.
[G] Getting close to the psychopathic stuff.
I may start babbling any minute.
We're here with Tina [N] Rose, Leon Russell's daughter.
Now, your mother was Mary Russell.
Mary McCreary.
And where is she now?
She's singing?
She's in California.
She's retired, living on the beach.
Those are some fantastic eyelashes too.
You've got to get a shot of those.
I'm addicted to eyelashes.
My eyelashes are different every day.
The drummer's my boyfriend.
Oh, that works out.
So, we're kind of coupled up in little groups in the band.
It's great.
So, if things don't work out, he's out, huh?
He's out of a job.
Well, things always work out.
That's why they've got two drummers.
Now I've heard that before in the club.
You were ahead of your time with concert films.
I know with the Leon Live album, they filmed the whole thing that was at the Long Beach Arena.
And then the films disappeared for a long time and showed up in somebody's freezer recently.
Makes a great reading.
[E] Unfortunately, that's not the real story.
There was a concert shot in Long Beach, one in the Carolinas, and perhaps one more.
I'm not sure.
But I didn't like those shows, and I didn't allow them to be released.
The freezer and disappearing and all that stuff, I don't know.
I saw some documents that I purportedly signed, along with documents that were signed by my partner,
representing Freddie King as his manager.
He was never Freddie King's manager, and I didn't sign the documents.
So it's one of those kind of urban myths that's going around.
But it's a great thrill to meet you in [D] person.
And I'm looking forward to the show tonight, and we follow you on the Internet and catch you whenever we can.
All right. All right.
Well, thanks.
