Oh mercy.
I just I [Db] want to tell you that I was doing fine until 1963.
[B] While I was sleeping.
[B] Wait a minute.
He wants to take a picture.
Come [E] on.
Take a picture.
[G] Here. _ _
There.
_ [N] Get some action in this.
Hey.
[G] Get that.
Get that head.
Hey.
Lou.
Lou.
This isn't your trio for Christ's sake.
That's it.
There.
_ [A] Come on.
There.
_ [G] That's it.
That's it.
[N] _ _ _ _ _ _
It was in 1963.
And I was happier than hell.
We were playing in Las Vegas.
And Mary and I went down to do the Colgate Comedy Hour in Hollywood with Abbott and Costello.
I don't know if you guys, anybody's that old.
_ _ That was in 1963.
And Mary and I did a thing on the stage where I says follow me.
And she [Bm] says, OK.
_ And [Em] so I hit a chord.
I hit [G] a chord, you know, like that.
And she hit a chord like [Em] that.
And then I went, [N] will you do that?
You do Mary's [E] part.
_ _ [Eb] _ [B] We didn't even rehearse this.
Mary and I rehearsed this thing.
Yes.
[E] I can't do that [Bb] anymore.
Oh, do this.
[Dbm] _
_ [Bb] _ _ [D] _ _ [N] See, you got problems, too.
_ _ _ _ Surgery didn't help you either, did it?
_ _ _ Well, what happened [E] is that I played.
Finally, I played a fast run.
[C] And I can't do that anymore either.
[E] And I did this fast run [N] down the board.
And Mary started to play it.
And I went like that.
Like that.
And I grabbed her hand [E] and I cracked [B] my little finger on the program, on the TV show in 1963.
_ _ And I hit her guitar like that.
But I hit it this way.
And I broke [N] that little finger.
_ And we had to finish the song, which was called Home Sweet Home.
We may even do it for you.
But this number, Mary and I did.
And when we finished that, we had to go in and play Tiger Rag.
The next song was Tiger Rag.
_ _ _ _ And, jeez, Christ, I played a lot of guitar at that time.
And what happened with the broken finger, I come down and the string broke. _
This is in the museum.
It's over in the, what do they call it? _
Yeah, the broadcast museum.
It's in there.
You can go over and see this thing where I broke my finger.
And the first song, the second song, I broke a string.
And we finished that song.
Mary and I finished it.
When I got to the airport, when Mary and I got to the airport, people were all saying,
Oh, my goodness.
I saw you where you hurt your finger.
And then you went in and you played Tiger Rag.
And it almost made us famous, [B] you know.
_ [N] But not completely.
What really made us famous is when I recorded with Bing Crosby.
_ And when I recorded with Bing Crosby, that's when a lot of people that thought I was a guitar _
_ _ _ realized that _ Les Paul was playing with Bing Crosby in a song called It's Been a Long, Long Time.
_ [Abm] _
[B] And when that was number one all [N] over the world on the strength of that record with Bing,
_ _ I got a job in Needles, California.
_ _ In the middle of the Mojave Desert playing for four bartenders in an Indian.
And _ _ _ it was out there that I found out that I wasn't going to make it without a vocal.
_ _ This isn't sour grapes, but I was much happier with Mary than I was with Bing. _ _ _
[Em] _ _ [E] _ And likewise now.
[Bb] I know.
I don't blame you.
No, Lou.
[E] We had our moments together.
We had our moments, yeah.
Yeah.
_ _ _ [F] You fag.
[G] There you go. _
_ [N] Now we can tell everybody.
That's right.
Right?
For years we had to hide what we were up to. _ _
He's not eating.
He stopped eating. _ _
_ _ Ever since I blew your nose, you didn't even finish yet.
_ _ _ _ _ Don't worry about it.
_ So what happened is that I called Bing and I says,
Bing, I find that it takes both of us, you know, and I need you _ in Needles.
And he was making some [Bm] pictures with Bob Hope, some road pictures.
So he said he couldn't make it.
He was committed to making these Paramount pictures.
So I had to do the best I could without Bing.
_ _ And I'd like to do the number for you now.
_ All right? _ _ _ _
