Lesson 1 - Foot Technique (John Bonham) chords
Start Jamming...
Dan Zalak, coming at you.
There are two different techniques.
Pull the beater away from the head, and the other way is to bury the beater.
Both produce different sounds.
[G]
Notice the pivoting action in my foot.
[F#] [G]
Observe carefully as [F#m] you'll notice the beater being [E] drawn away from the head.
This produces a more round sound.
[A]
[G]
[E] And now a little slower.
Notice how my heel [G] doesn't sit on the ground or go up too high off the [G] floor.
[D]
[F#] Here's a little pool in the rain for you.
And now a little slower.
Notice all the vibration in the batter head.
Here's something Bonzo would do in games he could use.
One of my favorite things to do.
Now here come those steady 16th notes.
Watch my leg as you'll notice a pumping motion.
In
[E]
this technique you are able to do ghost notes and heavy, dewy accent notes.
[F#]
[E] This technique is called heel toe.
[G#] It is very commonly used [G#m] when you [F#m] have an unported bass drum.
[F#] When you don't have a port, there's a lot of air that needs to escape.
If you bury your beater, what you'll get is a rubbery kind of sound.
It won't be very tight and it [Em] won't sound as good.
What you must do is release the beater off the head.
Not bury it.
[F#]
This is by no means the easiest method to play bass drum.
[G] I hope you enjoyed my first lesson.
