Let me try a very long song.
So if I run out of words, I'll just mumble.
Oh, I really love this thing.
It's on Dylan's last album called Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts.
[Bb]
Festival was over and the [Eb] boys were all planning [Bb] for a ball.
Cabaret was quiet [Eb] except for the drilling [Bb] in the wall.
[Eb] Curfew [Bb] had been lifted [F] and the gambling wheel [Bb] shut down.
[Eb] Anyone [Bb] with any [F] sense had already left town.
[Bb] He was standing [Dm] in the doorway [Cm] looking [F] like the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
He moved across the mirrored room, [Eb] set him up for everyone, he [Bb] said.
Then everyone commenced to do what [Eb] they'd been doing before he moved [Bb] their heads.
He [Eb] walked up to [Bb] a stranger and [F] he asked him with a [Bb] grin,
[Eb] Would you kindly tell [Bb] me, mister, [F] what time the show begins?
[Bb] He moved into the [F] corner, [Eb] face down [F] like the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Backstage the girls were playing [Eb] five cards, stud by [Bb] the stairs.
Lily had two queens and she [Eb] was hoping for a third to match [Bb] her pairs.
[Eb] Outside the streets [Bb] were filling up [F] and the window was open [Bb] wide.
[Eb] The gentle breeze [Bb] was blowing, you [F] could feel [Bb] it from [F] inside.
[Bb] Lily [Dm] called another bet [Eb] and drew up [F] the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Big Jim was no one's [Eb] fool, he owned the town's only [Bb] diamond mine.
He made his usual entrance, [Eb] looking all so dandy and [Bb] so fine.
[Eb] With his [Bb] bodyguards and his silver [F] cane and every [Bb] hair in place.
[Eb] He took [Bb] whatever he wanted to [F] and he [Bb] laid it [F] all to waste.
[Bb] But his [Dm] bodyguards and his silver [Cm] cane, they were no match [F] for the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Rosemary combed her [Eb] hair and took a carriage [Bb] into town.
She slipped into the side door [Eb] looking like a queen [Bb] without a crown.
[Eb] She fluttered [Bb] her false [F] eyelashes and [Bb] whispered in his ear.
[Eb] I'm sorry [Bb] darling, [F] late but he didn't seem to hear.
[Bb] He was staring [Dm] into space [Eb] over [F] at the Jack of [Bb] [Eb] Hearts.
[Bb]
Well I know I've seen that face [Eb] somewhere.
Big Jim was thinking [Bb] to himself.
Maybe down in [Eb] Mexico or a picture upon [Bb] somebody's shelf.
[Eb] But then the crowd [Bb] began to stamp their [F] feet and the house [Bb] lights did dim.
[Eb] And in the [Bb] darkness of the [F] room there was only Jim and him.
[Bb] Staring [Dm] at the butterfly [Cm] who just [F] drew up the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Lily was a princess, [Eb] she was fair-skinned and precious [Bb] as a child.
She had that certain something, [Eb] was a kind of a flash [Bb] every time she smiled.
[Eb] She'd come away from [Bb] a broken [F] home, had lots [Bb] of strange affairs.
[Eb] With men [Bb] in every walk of life [F] who took her everywhere.
[Bb] But she'd [F] never met anyone [Cm] quite [F] like the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
The hanging judge came [Eb] in unnoticed and was being [Bb] wine and dine.
Drilling in the wall [Eb] kept up but no one seemed to pay [Bb] it any mind.
[Eb] It was known all [Bb] around that Lily [F] had Jim's [Bb] ring.
[Eb] And nothing [Bb] could ever come between [F] a Lily [Bb] and a [F] king.
[Bb] No, [Dm] nothing ever could [Cm] except maybe the [F] Jack [Bb] of Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Rosemary started drinking hard [Eb] and seeing her [Bb] reflection in the night.
She was tired of the attention, [Eb] tired of playing the role of [Bb] Big Jim's wife.
[Eb] She'd done [Bb] a lot of bad [F] things, even once [Bb] tried suicide.
[Eb] Was looking to [Bb] do just one [F] good [Gm] deed [F] before she died.
[Bb] She was gazing [F] to the future, [Eb] riding [F] on the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Lily took her dress off, [Eb]
buried [Bb] it away.
Has your luck run out?
She laughed at [Eb] him.
I guess you must have known it [Bb] would someday.
[Eb] Be careful [Bb] not to touch the [F] wall, there's a brand [Bb] new coat of paint.
[Eb] I'm glad [Bb] to see you're still [F] alive and you're looking like a saint.
[Bb] Down the [Dm] hallway, [Cm] footsteps were coming [F] for the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
The backstage manager [Eb] was pacing all around [Bb] by his chair.
There's something funny going [Eb] on, I know I can just feel it [Bb] in the air.
[Eb] He went to get the [Bb] hanging [F] judge, but the hanging [Bb] judge was drunk.
[Eb] And the leading [Bb] actor hurried [F] by in the costume of a monk.
[Bb] But there was no [Dm] actor anywhere [Cm] better [F] than the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Lily had her arms [Eb] around the man she dearly [Bb] loved to touch.
She forgot all about the [Eb] man she hated who hounded [Bb] her so much.
[Eb] I've missed you [Bb] so, she said to [F] him and he thought she [Bb] was sincere.
[Eb] But in the [Bb] hallway he [F] felt [Bb] jealousy [F] and fear.
[Bb] Just another [Dm] night [Cm] in the life of [F] the Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
Well, no one knew the circumstance, [Eb] but they say it happened [Bb] pretty quick.
The door to the dressing room [Eb] burst open and a cold [Bb] revolver clicked.
[Eb] And Big Jim [Bb] was standing [F] there, you couldn't say [Bb] surprised.
[Eb] Rosemary right [Bb] beside him, [F] steady [Bb] in her [F] eyes.
[Bb] She was with Big [F] Jim, but she was [Cm] leaning to the [F] Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Two doors down and [Eb] the boys finally made [Bb] it through the wall.
They cleaned out the bank safe, [Eb] said they got off [Bb] with quite a haul.
And [Eb] in the darkness of [Bb] the riverbed [F] they waited on [Bb] the ground.
[Eb] One more [Bb] member who [F] had [Bb] business back [F] in town.
[Bb] But they couldn't go [Dm] no further [Cm] without the [F] Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Well, the next day was hanging day [Eb] and the sky was [Bb] overcast and black.
Big Jim lay covered up, [Eb] killed by a penknife [Bb] in the back.
[Eb] On [Bb] the gallows board [F] she didn't even [Bb] blink.
[Eb] And the hanging judge [Bb] was sober, [F] Lord, he [Bb] hadn't had a [F] drink.
[Bb] And the only person [Dm] on the scene [Eb] missing was the [F] Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
[Eb] [Bb]
Well, the cabaret was quiet now and [Eb] the sign said, [Bb] closed for repair.
Lily had already [Eb] taken all of the dye out [Bb] of her hair.
She [Eb] was thinking about [Bb] her father, whom [F] she [Bb] very rarely saw.
[Eb] Thinking about [Bb] Rosemary [F] and thinking [Bb] about the [F] [Bb] law.
But most of [Dm] all, she [Cm] was thinking about the [F] Jack of [Bb] Hearts.
