I wrote Italy in November 2016.
I was on tour with my sisters in Europe.
I really was in Italy.
And I was going through the craziest breakup of my life.
And on this particular day, it was hitting me really hard.
And he happened to text me in the middle of all this,
all the craziness of touring and stuff,
like, I miss you, I'm in your town, where are you, I want to see you.
And it's like we were fighting and we weren't talking,
and then he comes back in.
And the whole breakup was several months long of in and out, on and off, hot and cold.
And it was so confusing, and I was just really worn out and drained from it,
and I couldn't handle it anymore.
And I remember I got off stage after that show, and I was just like,
I cried the whole show.
I didn't even try to hide it.
And I went back to my hotel, and I took my phone, and I filled up the bathtub,
[N] which is not the best idea, but I went in the bathtub with my phone,
and I just started writing while I was crying and crying and crying.
And the song came out, start to finish, one piece in 40 minutes.
I just wrote the whole thing down.
And I don't think I even did a voice memo.
I just memorized it right away.
I knew it.
And I didn't record it for a little bit after that, but I remembered it,
and I put it down, and I cried when I recorded the vocals too.
And the whole thing was just so emotional for me and such a release.
And it's definitely one of my favorites that I've ever written,
and I know a lot of you guys relate to it and connect with it.
It's definitely one of my favorite breakup songs,
and I hope it means something to people that are just finding it too.
I [A]
didn't want you to text [E] me, I didn't ask you to care,
[C#m] I didn't tell [C#] you to tell [B] me that you're always going to be there.
[A] You say that you just got to let me [E] know,
but you're always going to let me [C#] go,
and I fall so hard [B] every time you push me.
You [A] got your perfect aim and your perfect [E] words,
and I always end up getting [C#] hurt.
Now I'm crying in the [B] bathtub here in Italy.
[A] Why do you love to leave [E] me?
Do you [C#m] just want to be in [B] my songs?
Did you ever [A] care for [E] me at all?
Or [C#m] was it just fun and games [B] all along?
I [E] saw the real you, and I really loved you,
but I [C#m] don't know where that person [B] is gone.
You [A] just got here to tell me [E] you love me,
and you're [C#m] already gone.
[B] I [A] didn't want you to [E] chase me, I never asked you to run.
You [C#m] never knew me, the real me, you [B] just assumed I was the one.
I [A] already walked away and said goodbye,
[E] and you're already back to make me cry.
[C#m] It hurts so bad how [B] much I can't trust you.
You say [A] I mean more to you than I could know,
[E] but you're always going to let me go,
[C#m] and I have to stop letting [B] myself believe.
Yeah, why do [A] you love to leave [E] me, hon?
Do [C#m] you just want to be [B] in my songs?
Did you [A] ever care for me [E] at all?
Or was [C#m] it just fun and games [B] all along?
I [E] saw the real you, and I really loved you,
but I [C#m] don't know where that person [B] is gone.
You [A] just got here to tell [E] me you love me,
and you're [C#m] already gone.
[B] [D] You're in town for a [G] day, and that's how long you [Em] let me
cross your [D] mind.
As [C] soon as you leave the state, [G] you forget my name.
Once [Em] again, you leave [D] me behind.
[G] This could just go on.
[D] [Em] I could just let [D] you stay, but I'm a bridge to the ground,
and I'm walking [A] away.
[B] Why do you [C#] love to [E] leave me, hon?
Tell [C#m] me the truth, oh, please, [B] dear John.
[E]
[A] Did you ever care for me [E] at all?
Or was [C#m] it just fun?
[B] I [A] saw the real you, and I [E] really loved you,
