_ [Bb] _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
_ _ _ _ Music is [B] very_
constantly in interviews where [G] we ask, or I say we, songwriters, _ _ what
are you thinking [Eb] when you're writing and where do songs come from and all of that, and to
be [B] honest, it's work to make up [G] an answer because it's very difficult [B] to explain where
it comes from.
_ [G] It just kind of comes true a lot of the time.
And this _ is an old way
of talking about it.
There are old tunes in Ireland that _ they just seem to go back thousands
and thousands of years.
_ But the old fiddlers and composers, if they were ever asked where
did your tune come from, because there's some beautiful old Irish airs that are so perfectly
lonesome that they allow you to sit with a sad [Db] feeling and it's actually okay.
[G] _
Some of
them are very, very good for grieving in fact.
But a lot of these old people when they're
asked where their tune came from, they have the same common answer.
They would say either
it came from the [Cm] ferries or it came in the wind.
And I believe this. _
[G] I know the feeling
[Db] of being out in the [G] countryside or maybe even on the [C] beach and I can hear a note and I can
[Eb] hear a tune in the [A] wind _ _ [Eb] and can't place it.
And _ _ [G] _ _ technically you couldn't even write it
down, like it's just, it's its own thing.
But sometimes it gets away from me [Em] and it's
gone again.
And sometimes some of these notes [Ab] I just think, _ well, [Em] even in traditional music
and folk music it's gone so commercial that I wonder of some of them saying I don't [G] want
to be here. _
_ _ [Em] I don't want anything to do with this.
It [C] wasn't supposed to be for making
[Cm] money.
It's much deeper [Gm] and more beautiful than that.
_ _ This is called Old Note.
[C] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _ Thank you.

_ _ _ [Gm] _ Old note, old note, new among [G] my mind.
_ [Gm] _
_ _ _ [C] The whole note, [Cm]
the note [Eb] just moves the [Bb] movement. _
_ _ _ The [Cm] golden note and [Eb] so move [Bb] everything. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ I can't come to _ quantify the feeling. _
_ _ _ _ _ [Gm] I was walking
home having a dream and _ _ she [C] teased that [Cm] I was [Eb] weak and I [Bb] was faint. _ _
_ _ _ The [Cm] wind was filling
[Eb] _ behind [Bb] the spring. _ _
_ _ _ _ It's _ towering _ around and down before me.
_ _ _ [G] And someone in [Gm] spoken slang
can rock any tree.
_ _ _ _ [Cm] I heard what I'd [Eb] heard in [Bb] my dream _ _ _ _ _ [Cm] and it shot me back [Eb] into the ground
[Bb] below me.
_ _ _ _ _ And there I met another note long buried.
_ _ _ _ [Gm] And it sat upon its shoulders was
a memory. _
_ _ _ _ [C] I hope to [Cm] see how [Eb] folk music's gone [Bb] so nice. _
_ _ _ _ [Cm] I almost hate [Eb] to not _ [Bb] recognize. _
_ _ _ _ _ Better _ friend, dig up and resurrect. _ _
_ _ _ _ [Gm] I long to live among the song of our days.
_ _ _ [C] I long
to [Cm] see the [Eb] blossom, _ [Bb] lonesome beauty.
_ _ _ [Gm] _ [Cm] _ Sighing by the [Eb] side of [Bb] beauty. _ _
_ _ _ The wind will fill
you in behind the springtime.
_ _ _ _ _ [Gm] Float, old note, new among my mind.
_ _ _ _ [C] The whole note, [Eb] the note
just moves [Bb] the movement.
_ _ _ The [C] golden [Cm] note and [Eb] so move [Bb] everything. _ _
_ _ _ _ I can't come to _ quantify
the feeling. _
_ _ _ _ [Gm] I was walking home having a dream and _
