[C] Obviously there's a lot of great musicians [Ab] and great songs and great artists and albums over the years,
but Steely Dan, the music of Steely Dan, Walter Becker, Donald Fagan, just does it for me.
It did from the very beginning and it does today.
You talk about setting a standard [E] as a group that created records that are near perfect
and a body of work that's just really flawless.
I mean, folks like that don't come around anymore.
With Steely Dan, you knew pretty much if your part was on the record, you were going to be able to hear it
and all the decisions [Gm] were going to be great [E] decisions.
So yeah, [N] you knew it was going to be good.
Walter had a room at SIR Studios and our tech was like,
yeah, yeah, you know what Walter's doing right now?
I was like, no, what's he doing?
So Walter sent his tech out to buy new old stock tubes.
And now they're back and they're up in the room and Walter has about 20 of his amps here
and about 30 of his guitars.
Walter is taking every tube and he's putting it in every socket of every amp where it will go
and then playing every guitar through the amp to determine which tube should [Am] go in which socket of which amp
when he plays which guitar and then his tech's there to write down notes.
I [Abm] mean, we live in a time and work in an [Am] industry now where everything is,
you have to make it and get it consumed so fast that sometimes the [G] care and the craftsmanship falls by the wayside.
There's a couple of ways to record.
[N] One is to make all of the instruments sound as wonderful and juicy, lots of nice reverb
and you're in a really comfortable thing, everything you play sounds great.
They did not record that way.
There was no echo, no reverb, no anything.
It's a mic in front of your amp, everything was very dry.
Things that would kind of slide by did not slide by and that was like you had a magnifier on your part.
And they were listening to every part too.
They really cared about each and every note and kind of labored to make things as close to perfect as possible.
You got to respect that.
He was a [Bb] beautiful [Fm] guy, I got to say.
I mean, [Eb] [Fm] aside from being an iconic musician [Bb]
[Fm] and composer,
I always think of Becker and Fagan as the [Ebm] American version [Fm] of Lennon and McCartney.
