[G] I'm a songwriter.
You know, [C] back in the late [G] 60s, Elvis had become restless, [C] and he was tired of releasing the [G] same old weary soundtrack music from his [C] movies.
He wanted to perform [G] again, connect with his fans face [C] to face.
[G] He let it be known that he [Em] was looking for some new [Am] material and some new writers.
[G] I guess I just happened to be in the right place at the right [Am] time.
Now [G] we ended up with three million sellers in a row [C] in the ghetto.
[G] [C] Don't Cry [G] Daddy, [C] and this [G] one, which is aptly [C] titled for this show.
[G] Memories, [Cm] [C] respite in the pages [G] of my mind.

[G] Sweet memories.
[C] Memories [G] of holding hands and red bouquets and twilight's trimmed in purple haze and [Eb] laughing eyes and simple ways and quiet nights and gentle [G] days with you.
[C]
[G] Memories, I cling to them and tremble till the dawn.
[C] My [G] memories are all that I have left now that you've gone.
[F]
[Bb] Moonlit shadows rise and fall and paint your image on the wall to comfort me till I [Eb] fall asleep.
I dream of [C] you and fill my [Am] heart with [D] sweet
[G] memories.

[Dm] Speaking of [G] memories, [N] I know I'll never forget the first time that I heard Elvis.
It was New Year's Eve on Lubbock, Texas.
I was 14 years old and I heard That's Alright Mama [Eb] on the radio in Billy Akin's car.
We spent the next week canvassing the record stores for a new record by somebody named Almond Parsley [G] or something to that [N] effect.
And a few weeks later, Elvis came to town and he performed on the back of a flatbed truck in a big parking lot downtown.
And the girls went crazy.
And of course, the next day, all my buddies and me had turned up our collars and were trying to sprout sideburns.
Now, about a year later, Elvis came back to Lubbock, Texas, and he played for 17,000 people at the fairgrounds,
which was about 20 percent of the entire population of Lubbock, Texas at that time.
