Madman quick and dirty chords
Start Jamming...
Okay, it's a little video lesson on Elton John's song, Madman Across the Water.
This particular version that I'm going to show you here is done by Warren Haynes, the
band Government Mule.
And it's an unplugged version, acoustic version, kind of a campfire version.
It's pretty straightforward.
And hopefully you'll enjoy it.
At any rate, the song starts on an A minor.
There's a little intro that I'll show you real quick.
But what I typically do is I'll hit the open A string and work this chord.
I'll play it through real quick and then show you what I'm doing.
[D] [E] [Am] [D]
[Em] [Am] [D]
[A] [Am] [D]
[N] So what's happening there is, like I said, hit the open A [A] string [Am] and [N] give a quick shot
on that A minor.
And then I'm catching the E string on the third fret, sliding up to the fifth fret.
[A] And then [A] I'm rolling over and I'm catching the A string on the fifth fret and rolling
it up to the seventh.
[E] [B] Kind of like so.
And then [D] you can do whatever you like with it.
I've heard it just slide back down on the A a little bit like so.
[D] [E]
[G] [D] [E] [Am] [F]
Or you [D] can hit that harmonic and just add a little something depending on which strings you catch.
[G]
[Am] [D]
[A] And [N] so on and so forth.
However, whatever sounds good to you.
It's a very basic deal.
So anyway, that's the intro.
And we start off in the verse.
It's an A minor to a G to an F.
And I'm not going to sing this.
I don't sing very well.
But [Eb] let me just run through it and we'll go from there.
[D]
[G] [Am]
[E] [A] [G]
[E] [A] [Am] [E]
[Am] [G]
[F] [E] [F]
[C] [Am] [D]
[G] [Am]
[E] [Am] [D]
[E] [Am] [G]
[F]
[C] [D]
[Am] [G]
[Am] [Am]
[Em] [G] So that's basically [Bbm] the verse.
[Am] It's A minor, [G]
a G, [F] an F with a little hammer on there.
Walk [C] to a C.
Then a [D] D7.
[D] Little hammer with the pinky.
Then the [G] F, G, [Am] A minor.
And back to the [E] [Am] run.
[Bb] Now when we get to the end of the first verse, the chorus,
[B] that's [G]
[Am]
[F] [Bb] [Am] [G]
[Em] [G]
[C] [E]
an E.
Is
[C] [F] [E] [G] that wrong?
[Am]
It's a [C] C with your pinky down [G] to a G [E] to an E to the A minor.
[C] C, [E]
D7, [G] F, G, [Am] A minor.
So [G] that goes kind of quick.
But this is running into the chorus.
So it's [C] to [G]
the E, A [C] minor, [E] C, D7, [G] F, G, [Am] A minor.
[E] [C] [C] And that [G] repeats.
[C] [D]
That repeats in the chorus.
We'll come again next Thursday [C] afternoon.
[E] [F] [G]
[Am] [Em]
[F] [G] [Am]
And there's a little change that goes to the F.
[F]
Then to an [E] E.
[Am]
And [D] then we're back to the
[D] [E]
[Am] [E] [G]
[A] [D] [Am]
So [N] I think that should be enough to get you started, hopefully.
Just have fun with it.
It's a campfire song.
It's all in major chords, all in the first position.
And I'm sure it can be played better than that.
So enjoy
