Hey everybody, welcome back to Jody Hughes Music [Em] and today's lesson we're going to talk about that old
Favorite classic song Man of Constant Sorrow, you know, you've probably seen this in the movie, right?
Oh brother
We're aren't out.
I don't have my beard to pull down.
Actually.
I'm clean-shaven today if you haven't
So I'm definitely not gonna be doing that but this version here is just an easy beginner banjo version
You're gonna find out real quick that there's not a whole lot of right hand patterns involved and man
I have geared this for you beginners out there.
I know there's a lot of versions out there
But this is just basically the melody in G if you go and listen to the recording on the movie
You're gonna find out real quick.
That is not in G, but that's a much more difficult arrangement
This is just presenting to you the melody the bare-bones melody and just a few rolls and we're gonna have you playing it
So where your family friends can recognize it that is our goal
Okay, so let's go ahead and get started [F#] into the Man of Constant Sorrow here
So we're gonna have a pickup notes all on the second string.
I'm just gonna start with the open second string
[C] [C#] They're just walking up open one [B] two all on that same string
[G]
and from [Em] there
You're gonna drop into the third fret of the second [G] string with your middle finger and just hit it again
So this is all my pointer finger down here
[Gm] and the thing I want to tell [G] you before we get started too much is there's a lot of
Groupings of threes meaning that the roles are you gonna play the same role three times in a row?
So from here two, but then five two one three times so from here
So you see how I did five two one three times, so I'll take it from the pickup notes
[G]
And then we'll do a five two one open so lots of five two ones.
That's four five two ones in a row
Now from there you're gonna go to the second fret of the third [A] string
With your thumb down [G] here and then the first string open [D] so if I [G] put all this together
[D] All right.
Now we're gonna come [G] to the third string open
And then five three one five three one and you'll notice that there is a quarter note there at the beginning it lasts longer
All right now these are just plucked out notes.
No rolls involved third string open
second string open
second fret of the [Am] third string and
Then third string [G] open again, so you got four notes
And I'm just picking out the melody so here's the whole first four measures
From there you're gonna go into a partial C chord here [C] first fret of the second string
Second fret [G] of the first string and there's our five two one five two one roll again
You're gonna hit [C] two and then five two one three times.
There's that grouping of three
[Em] And then come to five all right, so I'll do that again.
We're [F#] gonna come to rest on [C] five
And [G] then two more little pickup notes first fret [C] of the second string
And [G] I like to put in the second fret of the second [Cm] string as a chromaticism
[Gm] Because I'm walking back up to that three that's our destination, so I'll take it from the C [C] again
[G] [Gm] And notice how one two to three are slower
[G] Now here we're on a [D] D chord at this point in our song
[G] So in order to make it sound like a D.
What I like to do is use the fourth string open
[D] Because that is a D note that makes it sound more like a D as opposed to like a G there
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna hit two four two one and once again.
There's gonna be that grouping of three so
[D] So two four two one four [Gm] two one four two one all right.
I'll do that again
[D]
We're gonna do four two one one last [Gm] time
But at that point our finger is gonna be [B] on the first fret of the second string so those two [D] measures
And use your pointer finger up here
And then the reason we're gonna use our pointer fingers [Gm] we're gonna want to come in to the third fret of the third string
[G] And then the first string open and here are the complete two measures there
[D]
[A#] [D] [Gm] It's a nice kind of bluesy sound there, [G] and then of course back to our just open [G] forward roll three
Five three one five three one and then the last measure is simply just three
Two pinch okay, I'm gonna take it from the very top, and I'll play through it kind of slow for you one two ready go
[C] [G]
