[E] We're going to be looking at Black Orpheus.
I've done a video on this before which was just the chords.
Today I want to focus on [A] a [D#] combination, an arrangement which includes melody as well
as the chord progression.
[F#] So let's begin with the intro.
So we're going from [Dm] D minor 4.
[Am]
[Dm] [Am]
[Dm] [Em]
[Am] [F#m]
So with the melody, [D]
[Am] okay so we put [F#] the two together.
[Dm]
[F#] [Am]
[Dm] [D] [Am]
[D]
[Em] [Am]
[F#] [Dm] So if [Am]
you want to [Em] just, [B] I tend to just play the top [A] three strings so I don't do the full
bar chord but you could do the full bar chord [F#m] if you wanted.
[C]
[F#]
[E]
[G] [Am]
[C#] Okay now we get to the [Am] start which is, we've got an A minor 7,
[B] B minor 7 flat 5, [E] E7 flat 9.
Okay so [Am]
we've [B]
[D] got this [B]
E7, [E]
[F#m] [Am]
we go to A [E] minor, [Am]
the descending, [E] [Am]
A minor, A minor major 7.
[E] So let's just repeat that.
[Am]
[F#] [B]
[E] [Am] [G#]
[Am] [A]
Okay?
[Am] So,
[B] [E] [Am]
[B] just give a stretch to that chord.
[Em]
[F#] [F#m] [F] We've got time to go from [B] here.
I just [A] find it a nice [F#] chord to play.
And we'll, [B] [Dm] flat [Bm] 5.
[B] [Bm]
[B]
We've actually got, yeah, the [D] melody which [Bm] forms
[G] [B] a [F#]
[B] [Bm]
[F#]
[B]
flat 7.
[Dm] So we've got the minor 7, the flat 9, the flat [B] 5, [E]
[Bm]
[B] [F#]
E7 and slide [Am] up.
Second time [Dm] around, A minor [G] 7, G7, [C] [Em]
so C major.
[Am]
[Dm]
[D]
[G] There's a bit of a stretch here.
[C] [Em]
Alright, and as a [G] connector, we do a [F#] C sharp [A] diminished to a 7 flat [G] 9.
[D]
Now we move on to the next bit.
So, let's repeat that.
[E] [Am]
[B]
[E] [F#m] [Am]
[Am]
[D]
[Dm] D minor.
[G] [C]
[Dm] So we've got, [C]
[F] which [C] is a 2-5-1 pattern.
Okay?
[B] So we've got a flat 9 in C, [G#] which is sort of where we're [Dm] heading.
So,
[C] all of a sudden we're in C major [Em] 7, which is the [F#]
[C] relative major.
[G] [A]
And now we start our circle of [F#] fifths.
So we'll [A] kind of do this little turnaround [Dm] and
[C#] [F#] then
[A] [D] [Dm]
[G]
[F] [C]
[F]
[D] [B]
[E] Okay, so we've [Dm] gone D minor [G] 7, [C] G7, C major 7, [F] F major 7.
[B] D minor 7, flat 5, or B half diminished.
[E]
E.
[Am] So this [G]
[C] [B] [E]
[F] [C] [G#]
[Am] is [F#] a very common chord progression in bossa nova, [D#] also in jazz.
[Em] [G#] [C]
[D] [Dm]
[G] [E] [C]
[F]
[D] Okay, so
[G]
So I'm going like
[C]
So, D minor, C major 7.
[F] And I [C] play it with the M first, then the A.
[F]
[D] [B]
[E] [D] [Am]
[E]
[F#] Okay, so there's the first section.
We've looked at the melody, we've looked at the chords, progression,
which includes 2-5-1 and circle of fifths.
There's a few stretches, and obviously you want to practice it slowly to enable that fluency.
Next week we're going to be looking at the second part and also some improvisation techniques.
If you have any questions, let me know, and we'll catch up next week.
