_ [A] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ _ _ We're going to be looking at Black Orpheus.
_ I've done a video on this before which was just the chords.
Today I want to focus on _ _ [A] _ a [D#] combination, an arrangement which includes melody as well
as the chord progression.
_ _ _ [F#] So let's begin with the intro.
_ So we're going from [Dm] D minor 4.
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _
_ [Dm] _ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _
_ _ [Dm] _ _ _ _ [Em] _ _
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ [F#m]
So with the melody, _ _ [D] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Am] okay so we put [F#] the two together. _ _
_ _ _ _ [Dm] _ _ _ _
_ [F#] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _
_ [Dm] _ _ _ [D] _ _ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
[Em] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F#] _ _ _ [Dm] So if [Am] _
_ you want to [Em] just, _ [B] I tend to just play the top [A] three strings so I don't do the full
bar chord but you could do the full bar chord [F#m] if you wanted.
[C] _ _
[F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [C#] Okay now we get to the [Am] start which is, _ we've got an A minor 7, _
_ _ [B] _ B minor 7 flat 5, _ _ [E] _ _ _ E7 flat 9.
Okay so _ _ [Am] _ _
_ we've _ _ _ [B] _ _
_ _ _ [D] got this _ [B] _ _
_ _ E7, _ [E] _ _ _
_ _ _ [F#m] _ _ [Am] _ _ _
we go to A [E] minor, _ _ [Am] _
the descending, _ [E] _ _ _ [Am] _ _
_ _ _ _ A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ minor, A minor major 7. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [E] So let's just repeat that.
[Am] _ _
_ _ [F#] _ _ _ _ [B] _ _
[E] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ [G#] _ _
[Am] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _
Okay?
_ _ [Am] So, _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ [E] _ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ _ [B] _ _ just give a stretch to that chord.
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
[F#] _ _ [F#m] _ _ _ [F] We've got time to go from [B] here.
_ _ I just [A] find it a nice [F#] chord to play.
And we'll, [B] _ _ _ _ [Dm] _ _ flat [Bm] 5.
_ _ [B] _ _ _ [Bm] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ _ _ We've actually got, yeah, the _ _ _ [D] _ _ melody which [Bm] forms _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ [B] a _ _ [F#] _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _
[F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [B] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
flat 7. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Dm] So we've got the minor 7, the flat 9, the flat [B] 5, _ _ _ [E] _
_ [Bm] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[B] _ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _
E7 and slide [Am] up. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Second time [Dm] around, A minor [G] 7, _ _ G7, _ [C] _ _ _ [Em] _
so C major.
_ _ _ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ _ [Dm] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
[G] _ _ _ There's a bit of a stretch here. _
[C] _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
Alright, and as a [G] connector, _ _ _ we do a [F#] C sharp [A] diminished to a _ 7 flat [G] 9. _ _ _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _
Now we move on to the next bit.
So, _ let's repeat that.
[E] _ _ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [B] _
_ [E] _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ [Am] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
[Dm] D minor.
[G] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
[Dm] So we've got, _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
[F] which [C] is a 2-5-1 pattern.
Okay?
[B] So we've got a flat 9 in C, [G#] which is sort of where we're [Dm] heading.
So, _
[C] _ _ _ all of a sudden we're in C major [Em] 7, which is the _ _ [F#] _ _ _
[C] relative major.
_ _ [G] _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ And now we start our circle of [F#] fifths.
So we'll [A] kind of do this little turnaround [Dm] and _
_ _ _ _ [C#] [F#] then_ _ _
[A] _ _ _ [D] _ _ [Dm] _ _ _
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ _ Okay, so we've [Dm] gone _ _ D minor [G] 7, _ [C] G7, _ C major 7, _ [F] F major 7.
_ _ [B] _ _ D minor 7, flat 5, or B half diminished.
[E] _ _
E.
_ [Am] So this _ [G] _
_ [C] _ _ _ [B] _ _ [E] _ _
[F] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [G#] _
_ _ [Am] _ _ is [F#] a very common _ _ chord progression in bossa nova, [D#] also in jazz.
_ _ _ [Em] _ [G#] _ _ [C] _
_ [D] _ _ [Dm] _ _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ [C] _ _
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ Okay, so_ _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ So I'm going _ _ _ _ _ like_ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ So, D minor, C major 7. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [F] _ _ And I [C] play it with the M first, then the A.
[F] _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ [Am] _ _
_ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ [F#] _ Okay, so there's the first section. _
_ We've looked at the melody, we've looked at the chords, _ progression,
which includes 2-5-1 and circle of fifths.
_ There's a few stretches, _ _ and obviously you want to practice it slowly to enable that fluency.
Next week we're going to be looking at the second part and also some improvisation _ _ techniques.
_ If you have any questions, let me know, _ and we'll catch up next week. _
