_ _ _ _ [D#] _ _ _
Hello again, my name is John [B] Mann.
I'd like to show you another man.
_ _ _ This one is an _ _ _ SEM5. _ _
[N] SEM for solid electric mandolin.
It is a solid body.
_ It's a five [G#] string which is tuned _ EADG
[C] with a low C string. _ _ _ _ _
It has a [Em] _ _ curly [N] maple.
This is a nice one piece curly maple top. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ It's mahogany back and sides _ _ _ _ with a neck through construction.
_ _ _ _ _ _ My [C] five strings, _ I use a 14 and a half inch scale which _ _ helps alleviate a lot of five strings.
We'll have a what they call a floppy C string.
_ _ There's just [C#m] not enough tension on [Em] a C string at
13 and [F#] 7 eighths which is a standard mandolin [E] scale to keep that C string [C] tight enough. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ See, [G] it's nice and tight on a 14 and a half inch but [Am] the E string is [E] still
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _
[F#] not too tight.
So I [Am] found that to be the [Em] perfect compromise for _ scale length on a five string.
It _ _ _ _ has [N] two pickups, two DiMarzio Pro Trax.
_ _ It's _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ [B] wired to a _ _ master _ [C]
volume control. _ _ _ _ _
[F#] It has a _ [C] _ tone control, master tone. _ _ _ _ _
_ On the tone control, I usually actually
_ _ _ _ _ on this model [C#] it doesn't do series parallel.
It just _ splits both of them [F#] at the same time to make
[C] _ _
_ two single [Cm] coils. _ _
[B] _ _ [C] _ _ [F] _ _ You have two single coils or two hummers [F] _
_ or _ [Bm] _ _ I do have a [N] selector switch here that _ _
selects either pickup or both. _
Up [C] position is just the neck pickup. _
Middle is both pickups
and down is just the bridge pickup. _ _ _ _ _
That's the electronics. _ _ _ _
[F] This one has a Macassar
ebony fingerboard which is standard.
This is a standard model, one of the SEM5. _ _ _ _
Macassar ebony fingerboard with banjo size frets and 12 inch radius.
_ Gold hardware.
_ This is my _ _ _ _
_ own _ _ wraparound tailpiece that I make out of _ aircraft aluminum and have them plated.
[A] They're intonated _ [N] correctly for the five strings. _ _ _ _
Let's see, we're over _ 305 18 to 1 ratio [C] keys. _ _
_ _ Does have a [D#] two-way truss rod in it.
A Steve Smith [C] double acting
_ _ _ _ truss rod to keep your neck nice and straight if you ever need it. _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ _ _ _ That is the, [E]
and this one's I call [F#] a black cherry [G] finish.
_ _ _ I use a water-based
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ _ environmentally. _
_ _ _ _ So [G#] that's the _ _ [G] SEM5 _ [E] _ double cutaway [C] standard. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ I guess I should run through a few of the sounds here. _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
[G] Let's start with _ _ _ [F#] _
[G] the _ _ _ [C] bridge pickup by itself in _ single coil mode.
That's about as
_ _ _ thin sounding as [A] it'll get.
_ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
And we're [G#] going to go to the [G] two pickups _ with, _ _ [C] in single coil [G] mode.
_ [C] _ _ _ _ [G#] This is kind of your [G] strat sound.
_ _ [Em] _ _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
And then just the neck pickup warms it up. _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Okay, that's in all in _ _ single coil mode.
So we push this switch down here,
_ boost it up to two humbuckers.
We'll go back to the bridge position.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ And then both pickups.
So we got two humbuckers. _ _
_ _ [Cm] _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ Nice pulse sound there. _
_ And then just the neck pickup in humbucker mode. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [F] _ _ _ _ [C] _
That's about [A] as fat, the fat sound for it.
[D#] _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ _ [Cm] _ _
_ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Okay, that's the _ _ SEM5 _ _ single cutaway standard. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
