Hello, I'm Adrian, continuing my series of brief wire-based lessons.
[Em] Today I'm going
to be looking at the song Mannequin, which is also taken from their debut album Pink
Flag.
And I suppose this song is wire at their most poppy.
It's a great song, pretty easy
to play.
If you know your basic bar chord shapes, then this one shouldn't present too
many difficulties.
Let's get to it.
Nothing too difficult going on here.
Like most wire
songs, they're pretty easy to play.
And some of them are, it's quite hard to figure out
exactly what it is that they're playing, but none of them are particularly technically
difficult.
They're not really that kind of a band.
So I'm going to go through this reasonably
quickly.
Once again, if you know your basic bar chord shapes, you shouldn't have any problems
playing this song.
There are three sections.
I'm just going to take you through the song
section by section.
Let's start with this bit, which is the intro and the chorus to
the song.
It goes like this.
[Bm]
[A]
[Em] [Bm]
[A]
[Em] So we've just got three chords here.
We've got E minor,
a bar's worth of that.
Then we've got B [Bm] minor.
And this is a fifth string root bar chord.
But what I think I can hear on the record is that the sixth string is being covered
as well.
So that's an option you've got when you're playing fifth string root bar chords.
You can always play the sixth string as well with the bar.
And that means you've actually
technically got the fifth in the base of the chord.
And that just gives you a slightly
heavier sound.
It's not actually something that I recommend complete beginners do, just
because it kind of is a little bit confusing as to naming the chord and seeing its function.
But if you want a slightly heavier sound on a B minor and other fifth string root chords,
then that's something you could do.
You can hear it's just got that heavy low end there
with the fifth in the base.
So that's the fingering used on the B minor chord.
We've
got a bar's worth of that.
And [A] then we've got two bars on an A major chord.
This is
fifth fret, sixth string root bar chord.
The strumming is an easy kind of eighth note [B] down
up type strum.
You could do the [Em] good old down, down, up, up, down strum for most of this,
I think.
So down, down, up, up, [Bm] down, B minor, down, down, up, up, [A] down, A.
[Em]
[Bm] [A]
As long as you're
keeping your strumming hand moving, feel free to vary that strum throughout the song.
You
don't need to stick too closely to that exact pattern for the entire song.
Let's move on to
the verse of the song.
[D] That goes like this.
[A] [G] [D]
[A] [G]
[Ab] Again, we've got three chords here.
We've got a D [D] major.
This is a fifth string root, A form, D major chord.
Once again, you can just let your first
finger go over all six strings, I think, for that fifth in the bass, slightly heavier sound.
And we've got a G [G] chord.
[C] No, we haven't.
We've got an A chord.
So [D] it's D,
[A] A, [G] G.
So the A chord is a sixth string root, A major chord going down two frets to a G [D] major.
[A]
[G]
[C] So talk a little bit about the rhythm here.
On the D chord, I think we [D] can go down,
down, up.
We've only got two beats on that chord.
Then we're changing [C] to the A [A] major.
[G] And then we're pushing into the G major chord.
So if you've not come across that term before,
a rhythmic push, it's where you're changing chord on an offbeat or on an upbeat.
Usually that's on
the and of four.
And it just changes a little bit earlier than you might expect it to.
And that just
gives the whole song a bit more rhythmic interest and a bit more momentum.
So if I count this
[D] through, we've got one, two, [A] and three, [G] four, and two, three, [D] four.
So it's D, [A] A, [G] A, G.
So we're changing to [Ab] that G.
We're pushing into it on the and of four.
And that's if you're keeping
your strumming hand moving up and down, it's going to fall on an upward [D] strum.
So down, down, [A] up,
down, [G] down, up, up, down, up, down, up.
[D]
[A] [G]
[D] [A] [G]
[D] [A]
[G] Other than that, it's fairly straightforward.
But if you're
a beginner, you want to make sure that you're getting things rhythmically absolutely right in
that section of the song.
One more bit to the song.
And I don't know what to call this bit,
the other bit of the song.
And that's where you've got these little rhythmic stabs and stops.
It [D] goes,
[E] [A]
[G] [D] [A]
[G] [D]
[A] [G] so this is exactly the same chords as [Abm] the verse.
We're just playing them in a slightly
different way.
We've got the [D] D chord.
Just playing that once.
Then there's a rest.
You're
going to damp the strings, stop them ringing.
Then [A] you've got an A chord.
[G] And then you're going down
to the G.
And you're just letting that [D] hang.
[A]
[G] [Abm] And the rhythm there is [D] one, [A] two, three, and [G] four, and
two, three, [D] four.
[A] [G]
So once again, we're pushing into [Ab] the G [D] chord.
One, [A] two, and three, [G] and four,
and down.
[D] [A] [G]
Just repeat that.
And [Em] the last time, I think we're [D] going,
[A] [G]
[Em] just a little build up on the G chord.
And then we're back to the chorus
[Bm] [A]
[Am] until the end of the
song.
So that is Mannequin.
I hope you enjoy learning to play the song.
If you want more
wire, I've got more wire coming at you here very soon.
Tab for this one is going to be up on my
