[C]
[F] Hello [Am] turquoise [G] blue.
I'm Mark Ford and I'm from Long Beach, California.
[C] Music kind of found me and [G] my grandmother was searching for antiques.
[D] I'd go with her every month to the Rose Bowl [G] flea market.
And one day I found an [D#] old toothless [F] crazy man [Am] [G] playing guitar.
And he was having the [F] best time [G] I've ever seen anyone have.
I was like, I [E] want that.
Sometimes I don't call when you're [A] calling.
[E] Elton John, Davy Johnson.
Not necessarily [G] the guitar, but that was the first music [A] that I [E] had.
Then I found her Beatle record [D] and my dad's [B] Creedence records
and [A] Simon and Garfunkel and [E] Jim Cook.
[B] You know, all the good stuff.
[A]
[E] Well, the first band kind of grew out [C#] of [E] mom and dad's garage.
It turned [A] out to be Burnage Week.
[E]
They'd come over early and we'd [D#] watch [E] The [D#] Kids Were [E] Alright or something,
or a Jimi Hendrix movie.
And once we had enough [D#] coffee and enough [E] watching someone else,
we'd go directly to the garage and then do it as hard as we could.
I graduated high school in 84.
By 86, I [A] was getting rides up [E] to Hollywood to [A#] make it [B] happen.
[A] And then by [F#m] the end of [E] 91, we had opened up for Earth Crows
and all those relationships [A] started happening.
[B] By 92, I was playing with them.
[A] So I [E] arrived and it [A] was a [B] lot to handle when you're a young kid.
I got fucked up.
It
[E] was [B] intense and it was fast.
What I thought I [E] wanted wasn't really [B] what I wanted.
That was my bat.
[A] [B] If I was a [Em] bigger man at the time, [A#] I would have quit.
[B]
[A] [E]
[B] Most [F#] people that I looked up to died by the time they were 27.
So once I [E] hit 28, it was like, now what?
Elijah was around.
He was born when I [C#m] first started [E] with the Crows.
So he's 7, maybe 8.
The [G] formative years, I missed those [D] years, being gone with them
[E] on [G] the tour, [D]
after [G] tour, after tour, after tour.
[D]
[G] [Am] [G] Joining the Black Crows cut off [E] my relationship to [G] being a songwriter.
At the time, I was ready [Am] to [D] just [G] be a guitar player.
[D] But after a while, it got [G] to be a little bit of a drag
because I missed writing songs, telling my story about things.
[D] [Em] Elijah, he was [E] a young [G] man that had made [Am] some poor [G] choices.
Like Dad.
[F#m] I [G] just nabbed him up.
I said, look, I need somebody to go with me and play guitar.
[A] I'm going on [D] tour.
[G] That tour [Em] ended in, I'm not sure this [C] band is going to stay [G] together.
We should [Am] record it.
[G] [Am] And I had written some songs on the road, and so it was a buzz machine.
[D]
It [Bm] was a long [D] process of [Am] finding a center to stand on.
So [E] my wife and I had divorced and [D] remarried and [Am] broke up
and got back together.
[E]
It was just this constant [D] sort of trail of where's the truth, really.
[G] [F#m]
[Em] [G] [C] [G]
[Am] I meet this [D] [G] beautiful piano player in [Em] Sweden.
He was [G] playing with Pee Wee Ellis.
I was playing with Booker T.
[Am] [G] We just sort of hit it off.
And then they were [E] trying to get [Em] me to come and [D] play [C] guitar on their record.
And I [G] said, well, why don't [Am] you come out and [D] we redo [G] it.
And so [E] Phantom Lin [Em] came out to [C] Long Beach [Bm] Compound
and [Am]
made a [G] great record with [Am] Stu Jackson at the helm.
[F#] A couple years [D] later, well, I have these great songs
that I think are maybe my [E] best [Am] ones.
I called Stu and I'm like, you know, you have a bitchin' band
and [D] I've got some pretty good songs.
You [Bm] produce it.
I'm done producing [Am] myself.
So Stu [E] said, yeah, get here, get to England.
[D] Tracked at Rockfield, which was [G] fantastic.
We sat in front of the big giant speakers and [Em] nice [G] beautiful board.
I said, Elijah, this is what [Am] music used to sound like [D] all the time.
[G] So we tracked all the tunes in a few days
and then ended up here in a shed.
[C] I [G] finished it by the river.
[A] Stu Jackson [G] knows what he's doing.
If he was here [D] right now, he'd probably say
he didn't have to do too much.
And that would be correct.
It [F#m] was just a wonderful mixture of [A] the right people doing the right thing.
[D] But there were a couple of times when I was like, well, I,
[A] Blue Sky maybe, you know, I had tried to demo that thing
and I [D] just couldn't get out of the sort of Jeff [Bm] Lynne thing.
[F#m] And Stu came [A] running out and he [D] whispered to Matt
[E] and did some arm [Bm] movement.
[F#m] All of a sudden we had
[A] [D] and [F#m] it's like right on the head.
[G] It's full of
[Gm] my best friends and my [D] family.
[A]
And I couldn't be [D] happier.
It's a beautiful record.
[A] Set aside some time to clear out your day in your head
and put it on and just [D] sit there and listen to it as a [F#] whole piece
[G]
[Gm] and see what happens.
[D] Holy Ghost is just
[A] a [D] straight dose.
It's [Bm] pure.
[F#m] It might [A] kill you.
[D]
[Bm] [F#m]
[A] [D] [Bm]
