Mark
[Em] and I think that we met first in 86 maybe 87 there was a Cinemax special honoring Chet
Atkins who we were both great fans of.
Mark was on the show, myself, Willie Nelson, the
[D]
[Ab] [E]
[N]
Mark started coming to Nashville a lot he and [E] Chet [C] developed a great friendship that resulted in
[E] their wonderful musical collaboration and [Db] he started working with [D] some Nashville musicians.
[A] Yep.
[Db] [D]
[Eb] [Em] [Ab] [A] [Dm]
[Eb] [C] [D]
[Ab] [Eb]
[A] [C] [A]
[E] [Ab] [A]
[D] [A] [D]
[Ab] [Eb]
[A]
[E] [A] Mark and I just had [D] sort of a just a mutual respect our paths would [Eb] [C] intersect a [F] bit [G] socially
[E] [D]
[G] some point he was [Em] working on [F] Sailing to Philadelphia and [G] [E] had a couple of songs that he [A] wanted me to
sing on.
He came to Nashville [D] it was Thanksgiving [Eb] Day and [A] that evening I came into the studio and
[E] sang on Red Stagger [D] Wing [A] and Donkey Town.
[Dm] [A] Mark heard [D] something you know [Db] he [D] he thought [Eb] that there
[C] might [Ab] be [A] the beginnings [D] of [Eb] a whole other [Em] recording project other than just two [D] songs for an existing
[Gbm] record that he was working on.
So [A] so that's really how it started when [E] [A]
[D] [A] [D] [A] we had the [D] time why don't we
cut it [Eb] you know maybe a couple tracks here a [A] couple tracks there and kind of see [Bm] if it [A] develops into
something.
[D] [A] [D]
[Cm] [D]
[G]
[E]
[A]
[D] [Eb]
[Em] [A]
[E] [A]
[D] [A] [D]
[A]
[Ab] [Em] [A]
[E] [Em] So it wasn't like [D] this commitment [A] we're gonna do this [D] record there was never any pressure
it was kind of like [B] one of those rumors [C]
that people [Em] weren't sure it was actually gonna [A] be we
weren't [E] sure it was gonna happen so [A] it happened very for lack [D] of a better [A] [D] word organically [Fm]
except
I [B] always think [Am] there's a [G] method to Mark's madness you know I think he always knew what he [Am] was doing.
[G] The second [E] event [D] of the [A] [Bm] record was when he was [A] working on Rackpicker's Dream.
He was in Nashville
[Dm] with a [D] lot of his Nashville guys.
[Ab] He [Eb] said can you come in for [A] a couple of days and let's do [C] a couple of
tracks [G] and [E] see how it goes with what we've got [Bm] already.
[A] So then we had four [D] then there were four
and then I guess it was a couple years later he said I want [Bb] to come to [D] town and [G] let's finish this
record.
[Bb] And so we spent a week and we [F] finished we did eight tracks so all in all we probably spent
[E] less than two weeks in the studio on this record [Am]
spread out over a [A] period of time.
[D]
[E] [Bm] [A]
[D] [A] [E]
[A]
[C] [Em] [Bm] [Abm] It [A]
[D]
[A]
[E] just happened that we had [A] a very natural blend I [G] think vocally which [D] helped and I think we have
an [A] approach to making records which [Dbm] is [Gbm] similar [Bbm] which is [B] wanting to get that live [E] recording
get that buzz [Bm] happening [A] with the [Ab] band
[A] and [D] a real respect for the [A] song that the song is key.
[C]
[Bm]
[E] [A] [Bm]
[A]
[D] [A]
[E]
[A]
[E] [A]
[Bm]
[A]
[E]
[A]
[D]
[A] We realized in doing interviews together [Bb] that [B] we really have similar backgrounds from
being inspired by [E] music when we were young and it's basically
[A]
folk beginnings.
[D] People think [A] we're so diverse you know I'm over there in country and he's [E] way
over there in rock but if you go back to the [A] beginnings of where those seeds were first
[C] planted [Am] it's [A] from the songs a [D] real kind of folk music [A] beginning and I think you hear that [D] in his
[E] writing and in some of the melodies he's got those beautiful melodies and [A]
the [Bb] wonderful stories [E] that
he tells the characters [A] he's able to create these characters [D] and [Bm]
[A] I love that kind of writing.
[D]
[E]
[A]
[D] [Em] [Db] [D]
[A] Mark and I talked about [Fm] this [Am] in [Bb] interviews [B] that the great thing about [E] music is that it's [B] a
collaboration [E] on [A] every [E] level I mean [A] obviously this is a collaboration of two artists [D] but anytime you
step into the [A] studio you've got an engineer and you've got musicians [E] and hearing what other people
are doing and adding [A] your own [E] instrument whether it [F] be you know [G] a lead guitar [A] or fiddle or your
vocal as a part
[D] [Eb] of something you know [Bb] I'm grateful for that every you know every [Ab] day
of my life that I have been able to as Joseph Campbell says [G] follow my bliss.
